Doses are...: Calculated by weight, not age. If you are concerned your child has been dosed too much, ask your doctor to double check. S/he should be able to reassure you.

? How much/ml ? : Dosing for a 5yo is usually up to 50mg/kg. The average 5yo weighs 19kg so 950mg/day would normally be a common dose. The common oral form is 250mg/5ml so your dose of 8.5=425mg. When given twice a day this is below the maximum regular dose.

8.5 ml irrelevant: 8.5 ml is the volume of solution that the cephlexin per dose is. The real question you are asking should be the mg dose of cephlexin in the 8.5 ml volume of solution they are taking per dose.
