hi! i get diarrhea after 3 or more alcohol drinks. i've come up with a solution, i take one imodium during a night out and it prevents diarrhea. otherwise my stomach works normally. is taking 1 (or in rare cases 2) imodium tablets a week risky?

i took 2 imodium tablets a week ago and it has caused me to become constipated. i used a rectal suppository to have a bowel movement because it had almost been a week. two days later, im feeling like im constipated again. never had an issue before?

: Initially, try increasing the fiber in your diet, perhaps adding a dose of Metamucil daily to your regimen, and drink plenty of liquids. If this does not help or if you continue to have persistent change in your bowel habits, be sure to see your gastroenterologist. Good luck.

Diarrhea: Diarrhea has multiple possibilities. Firs explore your diet. You may be lactose intolerant, have a gluten allergy, or possibly an inflammatory process. Irritable bowel is the LAST diagnosis you want to get to. See your doctor as you are doing, have your stool checked for infectious agents, such as parasites, viruses, bacteria. You may need to have a colonoscopy to look at the lining.

We get more worried if someone requires more than 4 imodium (loperamide)s in a day. It works by slowing down gut squeezing in both the large and small intestine, decreases the amount of fluid put into the bowel, limits the amount of gas created, and even helps tighten up the anus to keep the bowel from leaking out the end.

Diarrhea Rx: Imodium can be used for travelers diarrhea and cramping as per label instructions, but most important is maintaining adequate hydration.  Drink generous amount of fluids that contain electrolytes, such as Pedialyte and avoid apple juice, milk and raw fruits and veggies.  If there is blood in the stools or a high fever, she should be evaluated.

Birth control: Imodium (loperamide) will have no effect on your birth control pills. Antacids may or may not affect your birth control pills
