can i get sarcoidosis after being around someone with it ? since i already have an autoimmune disease?

Accepted Answer

No: At one time there was a theory that sarcoidosis is an infectious process especially with the advent of the kveim test. That has not been proven and to date, we know of no one who contracted sarcoidosis from exposure to someone who has it.

why do i get nasal ulcers? i do have an autoimmune disease.

Accepted Answer

Many causes: Nasal ulcers can occur due to a variety of things. Nasal sprays, when sprayed on the septum (the divider between l and r halves of the nose) can cause irritation and ulcers. Physical trauma (e.g., nose picking) can cause ulcers. Cocaine will stop blood flow to the lining of the nose, leading to ulcers. Vasculitis can cause bleeding or ulcers. Discuss your symptoms with an otolaryngologist (ent).

Yes: A very interesting question. Anything that affects the immune system increases risk. For example Cocaine abusers run a higher risk of vasculitis.

Females: Women are almost 3 times more likely than men to have autoimmune diseases. Some diseases, or autoimmunity in general, run in families.

Yes: If you feel healthy, i don't understand what you mean by having an autoimmune disease.   Do you mean that they found some auto-antibodies in your blood tests?  If so, why were the tests ordered in the first place?  Even if auto-antibodies were present, it does not necessarily lead to disease.

Unlikely: Myasthenia gravis is an acquired autoimmune disease affecting women more often.  There does not seem to be clearcut heredity in many cases, and unlikely to afflict other family members usually.  Hard to predict who will get which autoimmune disorder but our work will hla typing will one day point the way.

PCP then Rheumatolog: You pcp can start the work up if you have a particular concert. Then a rheumatologist specializes in autoimmune diseases, but they would want a preliminary work up started prior to seeing them for the first time.

i had reason to believe i had an autoimmune disease but my gp disagreed. i decided to go get tested anyways (i was right) how do i approach this?

Gingerly: Tell your GP that you got tested on the advice of a friend (maybe us) and share the results.  Say you were surprised, but trust that s/he will help you understand and deal with them.

Urinalysis: You have had the screening tests. If the urine is normal and you do not have a skin rash and fever, use you money instead for exercise and relaxation.

hi i have hashimotos thyroiditis. my antibodies are in the 300s and my crp is high at 54. should i be concerned about the crp? is it from my autoimmune condition or something else? should i get tested for other autoimmune diseases?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, it would be prudent to follow your doctor's advice about additional testing. Elevated CRP is a non-specific indicator of inflammation.   Wish you good health!
