if a small piece of food goes down the wrong way (respiratory) and get stuck down there, what happens to the food if you don't surgically remove it? will it stay stuck or melt and become phlegm?

Accepted Answer

: The lung has good defenses, but if lodged in the airway, pneumonia may occur.
You may have swallowed it, and drinking non acidic fluids and yogurt may be helpful. Follow up with your PCP. Watch for fever and cough.

Icepack/cold shower: The fastest way to acheive detumesecence is to apply ice or cold waterto the genitals.  Otherwise temporarily leave the stimulating situation, i.e. Go to the bathroom.

Sometimes: Often aspirated food or fluid causes inflammation in the lungs, but it only occasionally causes infections (pneumonia).  If you have fevers, chills, sharp chest pain, or worsening cough then you may need further evaluation and perhaps antibiotics.

The unusual thing: is the that the feeling is numbness...the most common cause of disability of walking when arising from sitting is  degenerative arthritis of the knees and hips causing pain, but typically one doesn't feel numbness. The numbness suggests nerve involvement, very possibly from nerve compression in the low back/spine. A careful exam from a spine or orthopedic specialist is warranted. Imaging may help.

hello. i get stomach cramps when i'm half way through eating. after one hour the cramps settle down. blood tests are normal. what is wrong?

PUD vs GBD: Many possibilities   Need more history
Peptic ulcer Disease , GBD, IBS are top contenders 
Need further w/u. 
History of diet, duration of symptoms, associated symptoms need to be ascertained 
Further w/u with U/S , possibly  EGD
NEED GI CONSULTATION

i suffer with bad anxiety. i choked on some water yesterday by swallowing down the wrong pipe. im not sure that i coughed all of it up. will i get aspiration pneumonia this way?

: Not likely. Risk factors for aspiration pneumonia are old age, drinking large amounts of alcohol, poor gag reflex, and being less alert from medications or illness.  If you are otherwise healthy, you will not develop pneumonia by choking on water.

Your : Your symptoms are very concerning and you need to have a complete medical evaluation.  You should have blood test and thyroid tests.  You should have a complete medical evaluation.  Many women blame their symptoms on peri-menopause which is a possibility, but please get a complete medical evaluation to be sure that you don't have a condition causing your symptoms.

i had a hand injury over a month ago and cannot get my middle finger down all the way when i form a fist and it still hurts. i was told the injury is over a1 pulley and mri will not show what is wrong, will need exploratory surgery. is this true?

: I do not know about the hand but I feel it is ludicrous to attempt a surgery going in “ blind” without films . Even if they show “nothing” that will help the surgery. It can help prepare for the unexpected. The more information you can establish the better the result I believe

i have been suffering from a backache lately, it goes all the way down to my leg as if i will have a cramp.i have sore nipples	& light abdomen pains,don't get my periods at all. what could possibly be wrong? i was on depo till this year in may.

Depo ?'s: The effects of depo-progestins should be minimal after 5-6 months, but the suppressive effects of long acting progestins may have influenced ovulatory functions.  If pregnancy is possible, obtain a serum HCG test to make certain about pregnancy.  Ask your gyn physician about polycystic ovarian syndrome if the test is negative.
