when it's recommended that people get eight hours of sleep,  is that supposed to be uninterrupted sleep?  i wake two or three times a night.  thx.

Yes: It is desirable that no matter the length of sleep it should be uninterrupted.
At your age, it's very normal to wake 2-3 times .
Try to not have liquids 3 hours before going to bed.

hi, i am currently not getting enough sleep. my sleeping time ranges between 4-5 hours for the past two weeks. my son keeps me up. what are the side effects that i should be concerned with? how many hours i must sleep to recharge myself?

8 hours is best!: I’m glad you seem to be tolerating your sleep deprivation thus far.  We universally recommend a good 8 hours of sleep per night.  Without enough sleep, you could suffer headaches, difficulty concentrating, depression, poor coordination, and higher risk for traffic accidents, etc.  try to steal naps when your son naps and check out Weisbluth’s book “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby.”  Happy Mom Day

my two year old chocked on water a few times today while drinking from a cup. he keeps on coughing in his sleep every hour or so. should i be worried?

Pediatric exam: I suggest an examination. Your child may have inadvertently "inhaled"  ( aspirated) water while drinking and should be examined and probably x-rayed.

i have trouble sleeping, and i'm nauseous. what could be wrong? i don't know what's wrong with me. i'm having trouble sleeping lately. i wake up two to three times a night. i'll be awake for awhile, up to two hours before being able to fall asleep again.

Recommend that you see your physician: Recommend that you see your physician to evaluate for the presence of gastric reflux since your nighttime arousal seems to be related to nausea.

Vascular or neurolog: This could be vascular or neurologic. It may be a simple  problem, but you need to be evalauted. Contact your  physician for an evaluation.

In a way yes!: The lovely critters seem to have an agenda of their own! they seem to be stuck in a sleep time warp  that nobody really knows ;) ... If they seem to be thriving well, all these unusual sleep pattern will eventually  and hopefully ... Correct  itself! warmest regards!

Some ideas...: 1. Choose a set bedtime ; awake time.

2. Avoid daytime naps.

3. Avoid rich or sugary foods, alcohol ; caffeine 4-6 hrs prior to bedtime.

4. Daily exercise, but not right before bed.

5. Reserve bed for sleep. Not reading, tv, electronic devices.

6. Find ways to relax prior to going to bed. Meditation, yoga, reading. Do not take worries to bed.

Try these tips to start. Talk to doctor if needed.

i took two party pills for the first time, and now i'm in bed, can't sleep and seeing things. is this normal? can i sober up faster somehow?

Common, not normal: It's common but not "normal" to be intoxicated with an unknown substance.  You took "party pills" -- but what was actually in them?  If you're in bed now that's a good place to be.  Drink plenty of water, and let your body flush out whatever toxins you ingested.  If hallucinations don't subside in the next few hours, call your doctor.  Please consider whether a repeat of this is worth it to you.

can't sleep until 1 or 1:30 need to be up by 7. have been for almost two months. i'm tired all the time but i can't get to sleep. should i be worried?

Concerned: Please practice good sleep hygiene( google this if necessary).  Avoid using iphone, computer, tv after 8pm or get blue blocker sunglasses to wear while looking at them. Take melatonin 3 mg 2 hours prior to desired sleep onset. See your family doctor to rule out common physical causes and to evaluate you for depression or generalized anxiety disorder. Input from a sleep specialist or psychiatrist could be helpful. Best wishes.
