Night cough can also be due to post nasal drip from allergies or sinus problems.  Night cough may even be related to stomach acid reflux. If you have this you must begin to treat this with strong ant-acids. If you are overweight this is a vital way your body is telling you it is time to lose weight.

Prolonged acid reflux can cause cancer in the esophagus. Please do not ignore this symptom.

An allergy to dust mites in the pillow could potentially cause coughing at night.  If persistent, it is worthwhile getting evaluated in clinic. A proper history/physical should get the answer.

Nighttime cough: If the cough is a back of the throat tickle due to mucous draining down from the nose and sinuses when you first lie down, i personally find the most effective medication to be a mixture of Phenergan (promethazine) and Codeine cough syrup. If the nighttime cough is happening in the middle of the night associated with a sensation of tightness or wheezing in the chest, asthma inhalers will be more effective.

Perhaps the child is allergic to something in the bedroom and has asthma, or perhaps the child is regurgitating stomach juices into the throat (called gurd). When you lay down the sinuses begin to drain and will trigger a cough because of the post-nasal drip that occurs.  If the symptom has been going on for more that 7 to 10 days you should see you doctor.
