Depends on age: In children a cough at night may be an indication of chronic adenoiditis; possibly even sinusitis. In an adult i would lean more towards acid reflux as a cause.

Coughing at Night: Coughing is often worse at night or first thing in the morning when acute bronchitis is associated with mouth breathing from a stuffy nose or reflux of stomach acid into the back of the throat or into the airways.

Position?: If your cough worsens when you lie down, either at night or in the morning, it may be due to post-nasal drip or gerd. Both of these can cause bronchospasm and lead to cough. The treatments for these are different so see your doctor so treatment can be initiated if either or both of these proves to be the culprit.
