Difficulty falling: A sleep is often associated w/anxiety while waking up early and not returning to sleep is associated w/depression.  Periodic waking is associated w/overall light sleep. Insomnia: There are many attributing factors such as organic reasons, medications, worries re. Unfinished business during the day, worries about next day, alcohol, late night smacking, etc.  Try the sleep hygeine and consult your pcp if insomnia persists.

Insomnia: There can be all sorts of causes for difficulty sleeping.  Drinking too much caffeine, smoking, alcohol use, working on computers, or watching tv could promote insomnia.  Various drugs, pain, or stress could cause this as well.  If this has been ongoing for more than 2 weeks, consider seeing your pcp or a sleep specialist.

Vague but...: I would suggest seeing a Dr., whom can hopefully direct you to the right type of therapy for your issues.  There may be a sleep problem, but also may be stress or some emotional component that you need to be made aware of.

You may need: To reprogram your internal sleep clock. Even if you are tired, get up in the morning and try not to go to sleep until night time.  Try to exercise a couple of hours before bedtime. It may take a few days till you can shift your internal clock back to a night time sleep routine.

Some ideas...: ...To help with sleep involve improved sleep hygiene. To achieve this, try to go sleep and wake up at the same time every day (including weekends), avoid things that can significantly alter your sleep patterns (alchohol, drugs, caffeine), exercise at least 4 hours before bedtime, and keep stimulating things (tv, computer, cell phone, video games) out of the bedroom. Don't worry about ghosts!

See your doctor : Your symptoms could be due to a mood disorder such as Bipolar Disorder. The use of excessive caffeine or stimulants can do the same thing. Racing thoughts coupled with insomnia and the complaint of being unable to shut off your brain is classic for Bipolar Disorder. Please see your doctor to discuss your symptoms. I hope this helps.
