Sore gums: Usually means gum infection. The first thing to do is get your gums healthy, which means professional treatment. If you have sore gums you probably need the services of a gum specialist, a periodontist. Once your gums are healthy your treating professional can teach you how to keep them that way. But get professional care first. There's no pill, police, rinse, t'paste, or snake oil that will help.

Tooth abscess: It would be difficult for you to determine if you absolutely had a dental abscess with the symptoms you described. It could just be inflammation. Either way you should see a dentist to determine the cause and the proper treatment. All the best.

Symptoms: You may have an infection. Get a thermometer and take your temperature. Then call both your General Physician and your General Dentist to be seen for examinations. Only once a diagnoses has been establish can appropriate treatment be rendered.

what is the best way to help gums infected with gum disease? i have sore gums, especially in the back of my mouth, but i do floss and brush daily. is there anything i could be eating or drinking that makes this worse?

Sore : Sore or bleeding gums are signs of gum disease.  Alcoholic or acidic (sodas, sports drinks, etc) drinks can have a negative effect on your teeth and gums.  However, these alone will not cause sore gums.

Seeing a dentist or periodontist for a periodontal screening would be the best way to start.

Wisdom teeth: Pericoronitis or inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding a tooth tends to occur in the wisdom teeth area (the first and last tooth of the arch).  Pericoronitis tends to hurt and traumatized as occlusion with the opposing arch will further bruising the gum tissue.  Extract your wisdom teeth.

?gingivitis: Sounds like you have some oral infection starting.  With your throat aching, it may be best to see a dr. To check you out for infectious causes.  If it remains purely in your teeth and gums, then a dentist would be better.  Doubt the menstrual cycle has anything to do with it.  Good luck.
