i have constant hip pain and muscle spasms in my thigh and calf with numbness in the outer half of my foot. what other tests besides mri should happen?

Nerve damage: What your experiencing is nerve damage. It will or may be permanent if the cause is not corrected. Nerve conduction velocity is needed to help determine this. I would get the MRI asap. Then have your physician refer you to a neurosurgeon and neurologist to get further evaluation. A normal MRI and abnormal nerve study may indicate a more severe condition in terms of a demyelinating process.

i've had a leg cramp for 3 days, it's moved down my leg, and now my foot is numb, but still with a lot of leg/hip pain. is this dangerous?

Clot?: If your calf hurts or is larger in circumference from the opposite side then get to your doc right away for an ultrasound to look for a blood clot.  If you foot changes color or is cool compared to the other side then get to the doc asap.  I could purely be a cramp, but with out an exam it is impossible to tell.  Not worth the risk of waiting.

can hip pain be a symptom of herniated disc? i have l 3-4 disc protrusion (per mri) from lifting a heavy object.  initially i only had low back and hip pain.  over the period of 2 weeks i developed pain down my left leg and into the sole of my left foot.

The : The spine is made up of bony vertebrae and gel filled disks.  The disks act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae.  The disk is made up of an outer fibrosis shell called the annulus fibrosis and an inner gel called the nucleus pulposus.

When the disk is injured the wall of the disk may weaken, break and bulge out.  If the gel-like nucleus pulposus breaks partially through the outer annulus fibrosis this is called a disk protrusion.  If the disk breaks all the way through the annulus fibrosis this is called a disk herniation.

When you initially injured your back the protruded disk caused back pain.  The leg pain pain developed when the disk enlarged and pinched the leg nerve causing sciatica.

Disk disease can present with back pain, back pain that progresses into leg pain, back and leg pain or just leg pain.

The hip pain may be from the herniated disk, but it is commonly from injury to sacroiliac (si) joint or possibly hip done at the same time you injured your disk.  This is best determined by a history and examination by a spine doctor.

Pain and Numbness: If the hip hurts but the pain goes down to the knee, calf, foot or toes, you may wish to consider it sciatica - a pinched nerve in your back.  If the pain doesn't get better after 6 - 8 weeks of rest from high demand activity, tylenol (acetaminophen) or anti-inflammatory medicines, it may be worth seeing a doctor.  If the leg loses function (weakness) or if other major health issues develop - see one sooner.

after stretching, i could not stand from serious hip pain and burning.  i have leg weakness and muscle spasms.  want to get back to the gym, but pain ?

RICE: Rest, ice to affected area, elevation if able and anti-inflammatory (if no reason not to take one) are initial treatments.  Your complaints of weakness of leg are concern.  If no better in next 3-5 days, please see your doctor for evaluation.  Best of luck with this.  Dr R

knee was hurting one week
i thought it was due to my high arches + no support in shoes

See doctor: Now this rash could be an issue. You need to give more history. Do you go camping or are you outside a lot. See a doctor for exam and testing

Spinal problem.: With all that put together, my first thought would be an issue with your spine, perhaps a disc herniation or spinal stenosis. You may benefit from an X-ray of the lumbar spine with flexion and extension views along with an MRI of the spine to begin the investigation.

Possibly a sciatica: A sciatica is caused by an irritation of a nerve in the back that then can cause pain that runs down the leg like you are describing.  There are also potentially other causes as well.  Usually a detailed history and exam can determine the cause.  Thank you for your question.

hi broke hip in 2005 thn pins got infectd takn out . now 10 years later swelln feet leg knee also pain in hip if standing to long . had mri nothing?

See doctor: Hard to say without examining.  Can be left with a chronic pain syndrome where the damage had recovered but the nerves remain active.  And that might be why nothing is found.  If this is the case your gp can refer you to a pain clinic.  Best to see a doctor and get examined and go from there

i have had a partially numb lower leg for 4 weeks i had blood tests and everything was fine except for slight inflammation. i also cant lift my foot or toe up. spine mri booked - but i am only 21 so i am very concerned and hoping for some insights?

Accepted Answer

: You describe a classic foot drop.  Most often these are caused by a peroneal neuropathy,  but may also be due to low back discogenic compression of the  L5 nerve root.  An  EMG/ NCV study could distinguish the two causes.
