if my sural nerve is damaged, why is my lower leg and ankle swollen?i thought it was a sensory nerve?should i stay off of it?what is the tx anyway?

Sural nerve: Sural nerve runs on the outside of the lower leg to base of 5th metatarsal. It not commonly injured unless you had a lateral ankle injury, such as, an ankle sprain. Then you can have ligament, tendon or even a fracture which would explain the swelling. Either way, you should see a foot and ankle specialist.

Could be, but...: You should have this looked at asap. You need to make sure this is not a developing  infection.  If it is not an infection, it could be any number of inflammation problems - phlebitis being one of them. Gout or another inflammatory arthritis is a possibility as well as a skin inflammation indicating some underlying systemic problem.  Basic lab work can rule out a significant problem.

Swelling feet: may be due to being on your feet more during your trip.  Try to decrease your salt intake. and keep you feet elevated as much as possible.  If this does not help follow up with your physician.

Reactive edema: Is very common. It could also be bleeding.  It could be an underlying fracture or stress fracture.  If you think you have a broken bone see an er doc or ortho guy.

If you think yu have a DVT - which is different - you need to tell your family doctor this.

See your doctor: First get checked for a blood clot.  This can cause leg swelling and is more likely when you can't get around due to a joint problem.  If the problem is water/ fluid retention elevating the leg, decreasing salt in your diet, and support stockings can help.  If the problem is the ankle joint you will need to see your doctor for treatment before surgery.

Time to Re-evaluate.: Sounds like too much jingle and not enough jangle. The best remedy is to have your ankle thoroughly examined by an ankle expert. Two opinions would not be out of the question.

Several things: Some of the causes for leg swelling include congestive heart failure, malfunction of the valves in the veins deep in the legs, problems with lymph drainage from the legs and side effects of certain medication such as calcium channel blockers, Alpha blockers and lyrica (pregabalin).  Please see your doctor for an evaluation.
