why is the fracture taking so long to heal? i fractured my distal fibula in shape of w and l all in alignment so no surgery needed. i'm now 5 months post injury and xray still doesn't show bone fully healed. why else can i do to help it heal quicker?

: I would think that poor blood supply, which was damaged by the original injury, has been a factor in the delayed healing process. Electrical stimulation,specialized braces and types of specialized surgery are some treatments for this problem. . I recommend consulting a specialist in nonunion fractures at a department of orthopedic surgery at a university hospital near you.

big toe and ball underneath hurt bad after injury xray showed no broken bones. four days later still extremely painful.

Re-xray: All injuries eventually get better. Sometimes xrays do miss some fractures. A bad sprain will still be painful because the injury is new. for now treat the foot like it has a fracture. If no improvement after a week or two,  ask to have it re-xrayed

i have wrist drop due to bone fracture from last four month now i hve to wait or go for the nerve treatment?

Wrist drop: This must have been quite a fracture. What was the treatment at the time of the fracture? Did you have surgery or not? Yes definitely get the nerve checked and repaired if possible - its already been 4 months.

i believe i've had a stress fracture in my calcaneus bone for about 4 months. my podiatrist never x-rayed me. if i get one now, will it still show?

Possibly: If you had a true stress fracture and continue to have one the x-ray may show it. A much more sensitive test for a stress fracture not seen on radiographs would be an MRI.  An MRI will also show other pathology

my talus bone is fractured and torn ligaments. i'm in a boot. it's been a month now and i'm still in pain, foot is still swollen. and red in places???

Accepted Answer

Follow up: You would certainly want to continue followup with your doctor.  You could be in a normal healing process as talus fractures take several weeks to heal, or there are complications that can occur like a non Union or avascular necrosis.  Keep your appointments and follow their restrictions with regard to weight bearing status.

Normal healing: Dont expect full healing of the fracture at this point - full bone healing for that injury can take 8-12 weeks, depending on your injury.  Full maturation of healing may take even longer even.

is it "better" to have sclerotic bone lesions, than lytic ones with bone metases? is there still a greater chance of fracture of the affected bone, whether it is lytic or now sclerotic?

Good question: Excellent question.Unfortunately not an easy answer. But overall, either will do structural damage to the bone and leave it more vulnerable to a fracture or collapse.The lytic ones are quite a bit weaker,however, and can break with little or even no trauma.Both can be very painful and difficult to treat.Also,remember the source: breast,prostate,lung,thyroid, and kidney  are more apt to go to bone.

3 weeks ago i rolled my ankle, x-rays say no broken bones but although i can now walk it hurts sometimes and the swelling is still there is it normal?

Very normal: Expect some ankle swelling after a sprained ankle for about 6 weeks after the injury.  It is very encouraging you can now walk with limited pain.  Make sure you are doing rehab exercises to improve your recovery at this time.  If swelling and pain exist after 6 weeks see your medical provider for a recheck.

subsequent to sex and it still hurts. could i have fractured my pubic bone?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: This is pretty unlikely.  It takes a lot of force (most commonly, a car accident or a significant fall) to fracture a pubic bone, so unless you think there was that much force, i wouldn't worry about a fracture.  More likely it's just inflammed.

is it ok to fracture a bone and still walk on it?

Yes you can: Some people have no pain sensation due to neuropathy (diabetes..) could fracture bone and walk because they will not feel the pain.
Charcot arthropathy occurs as a complication of diabetes, syphilis, chronic alcoholism, leprosy, meningomyelocele, spinal cord injury, syringomyelia, renal dialysis, and congenital insensitivity to pain.
