Knee problem: Have u injured your knee? May have torn a meniscus with a piece getting caught in the joint space & limiting  flexion. Another possibility is a baker's cyst at the back of the knee (unlikely at your age). See your pcp or orthopedics for full knee evaluation & options for treatment.

Time to see doc..: You possiblely have extra joint fluid (effusion), or a baker's cyst in back preventing you from bending your knee. It is not possible to tell what you have or to better advise you since the information you provided is so limited. Thorough history and exam are very important for an accurate diagnosis..Please consult doc for eval. Motrin/aleve may help a bit. Good luck to you.

See ortho: The er may not do anything but give you crutches and a referral.  See an orthopedic surgeon. They can get your knee moving though it might mean an injection   rarely you may need surgery if you have a locked meniscus tear.

Depends: It all depends on how far post-op you are. If it is just a couple of days then work on sliding your heel up and down the bed. If you are a couple of weeks to months out from surgery you could have excessive scar that formed. Of course it also depends on what diagnosis they found during surgery. If there was bone on bone arthritis that could also cause the knee to lock up.

Yes: Muscle balance (those that are active vs. inhibited) is important for all of us to prevent injury. Your hamstrings require adequate stretch given your height. When you are flexed they get tight or cause pain due to spasm. Internal derangement: Water on the knee, an effusion, is always due top an underlying cause, especially in a healthy 22 year-old. Causes include a meniscal tear, cartilage injury, ligament sprain, etc. A thorough knee evaluation is warranted. See your PCP or Orthopaedic Specialist.

No. : No. Five minutes is a short time. The real question is does your knee hurt when you bend it or does it not bend because it is "locked". If the knee is "locked" that means it can't bend because something is "caught" between the thigh bone and the shin bone which prevents the smooth flexing and extending motion. This may be a loose piece of bone or cartilage or a tear of one of the meniscus cartilages. Wait, relax, hot packs and massage and the knee may bend as it "unlocks". Repeated locking is cause for an orthopedic visit.
     If your knee hurts when you bend it, the causes are multiple and could be muscle or tendon or ligament or nerve that is being irritated when the knee moves. An irritation in the low back may also cause pain to be "referred" to the knee. Observe the timing the pain, what makes it better, what makes it worse and if  any associated signs such as warmth or swelling are present. Then go to your family doctor or orthopedic surgeon arms with information that can help define the reason for knee pain when bending.
