Get diagnosis:  The first step in treating knee problems is to determine the cause.  The treatment of knee synovitis will vary depending upon the disease.  If you have synovitis from rheumatoid arthritis the treatment is very different than if it is from pseudo gout.  Please see a doc.  Ask again if you can provide more details and/or need more info.  Sorry I cannot be more help.

Condromalacia: Chondromalacia is a cartilage problem and can cause synovitis. Both are curable.

Gout: Synovitis can return immediately. Stay hydrated and take your gout meds to lessen the chance of return.

Injection or surgery: I'm assuming after 3 years you have tried pt and antiinflammatories.  Draining the knee followed by a cortisone injection (assuming the fluid doesn't look infected) could help.  If there is any suspicion for infection, hold off on the cortisone until the synovial fluid has been evaluated.  Last resort is to see an ortho surgeon about a synovectomy.

3 y.o has had transient synovitis in her right knee for 8 weeks. still swollen, painful & limping. could it be the wrong diagnosis if it is lasting this long? if not synovitis, what else could it be?

: If problem has persisted for 8 weeks it can't be transient. Your child needs to be re-examined, preferably with a rheumatologist.

Synovitis: yes, it is but you should have your child examined to be sure it is in fact synovitis and not a more serious infection

This is due to bleed: Since not all of the synovium was  removed there may be persistent synovitis. The question also is do you still have  bleeding into the joint. Have  you had a post  operative  MRI to see if  synovitis  persists? You of course  also need  persistent  exercise to make certain the  surrounding musculature is good and stays  strong to support the knee. You need  to discuss  with  your doctor.

Inf;ammation: of the dynovial sac or symnovial fluid, usually easily treated.

Yes: Arthroscopic removal can often be performed therough several small holes, in addition it allows examination of the whole joint and should be performed by an orthopedic specialist. Open surgery is rarely necessary but on occasion is performed and the time of arthroscopy for "technical" reasons.

Radition therapy has also been used either with a beam or injection of radioactive chemicals.
