Reduce stress: If you start hyperventilating, start by trying to avoid the source of stress that triggered it. There are biofeedback exercises that can be done to reduce your symptoms. Some speech therapists can also help you with such exercises. It can causes symptoms similar to asthma, but it is usually not the case. It can be vocal cord dysfunction. An otolaryngologist can easily diagnose it

Not dangerous: Hyperventilation syndrome not considered dangerous. Several practices can help reduce hyperventilation. Practicing mindfulness breathing may help. Several things: Work with a psychotherapist on your anxiety, possibly with medications from a psychiatrist if needed for that. You have a chronic behavior pattern that requires practice to change.  So in addition to the above,  work with a respiratory or physical therapist on your breathing practices.  A yoga teacher working with you individually might help; even learning a wind instrument.  No quick fix.

It Depends..: Behavioral breathlessness and panic disorder overlap quite bit and a visit to your internist certainly sounds in order. Further, many other metabolic and anatomical conditions cause some of these symptoms, so a full workup is appropriate.

i took escitalopram 10mg for 2months for hyperventilation now started to taper off medication from 10 to 5mg two weeks back...now i have discontinuation syndrome of hyperventilation what to do now??

: I would take 50-100 mg of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-htp) daily while tapering the SSRI. When you are off the drug, you can slowly taper the 5-htp.

Hyperventilation?: I don't believe you can forget how to breath. If you can't catch your breath we call that sob, shortness if breath.  There should be a reason. Before you assume it is stress or anxiety you most make sure it is not from the lungs or your heart. You may need asthma like bronchodilators. Or you may have fluid overload. Have you been back to the doctor?  Do you smoke. Have you been told  you have copd.
