hi, i have a fungus under two of my toenails that i wish to treat. i am 11 weeks & some days pregnant. is it safe to soak my feet in hydrogen peroxide?

No : Hydrogen peroxide alone should not be used to soak feet.  It can however, be diluted 3 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide and applied to the nail directly with a cotton pad.  You should always verify any treatment with your OB before starting!

Fungus: Anti-fungal medicine would work the best.  Typically athletes foot loves a dark moist area like your enclosed shoe gear.  Keeping your feet dry by changing socks, cotton socks and even using antiperspirant sprays between toes and bottom will help!

Yes: Hydrogen peroxide is helpful in killing the bacteria that cause a toenail infection.  However you should see a podiatrist to determine if you have an ingrown toenail, which need to be treated with antibiotics and possible removal of part of the nail.

i stepped on a staple and it cut the bottom of my foot. it wasnt a very big or deep cut. afterward i used hydrogen peroxide and neosporin on the cut. the staple was not rusty, but i have started to have ankle pain. do i need a tetanus shot?

Yes: If you did not have a booster in the last 10 years. Your GP may have records if you cannot remember when you had the last tetanus shot.

: Hydrogen peroxide is a good cleansing agent for wounds. It kills staph germs on contact. After cleaning please be sure to dry the area and apply an antibiotic cream over the site. A wet wound slows healing.

It is an: Antiseptic, usually not the sole treatment.  Removal is what is done if not resolved.  Antibiotics if it gets infected.

Ingrown toenail : I would avoid the nail polish until your doctor sees you back and clears you for such things. Also, as an aside, hydrogen peroxide can be quite caustic to healing tissue. I would advise only using it on a new dirty wound but not something that is in a healing phase. Please call the doctor that operated on the ingrown toenail to advise you on what to use as a day-to-day dressing. Good luck!

: Hydrogen peroxide used on the skin will not harm your baby.  Generally soap and copious running water is best.  Getting an infection would be more worrisome.

Infections: Hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean openings in the skin such as wounds or surgical sites.  While it can kill bacteria, if an area has already developed an infection, the safest thing to do would be a course of antibiotics to ensure that the infection doesn't spread.

Accepted Answer

Yes, but they are : Unlikely to work.  What needs to occur, most likeli, is to remove the wedge of the nail going into the skin.  It's not hard but you will need some local anesthetic.  It should then regrow normally.  Your OB may feel comfortable doing it, not hard.  A podiatrist would be a sure thing, most primary care docs can do it as well.  Good luck.
