: Regardless of where in each tube there is obstruction, and no free flow of dye was detected,  consult your GYN physician for guidance, as "in vitro fertilization" may be your only alternative. Sometimes a "distal isthmal obstruction" can be removed surgically, but successful pregnancies are rare at age "40", and medication to enhance ovulation may be required.

hi doctor i went for an hsg test on the 16 april 2014. ....my docs says my left tube is occluded at the cornual end.....what can we do?

Occluded Tube: Not a lot that can be done.  In the us, most docs have abandoned tubal corrective surgery as the rates for ivf are better than conceiving after the tube (s) has been repaired. Also, when the tube has been either operated on or previously damaged, there is an increased risk for an ectopic pregnancy. At 24 years old, i would just try to get pregnant naturally for at least a year.

Possible infection: You don't say how you know the tube is blocked, but sometimes simple spasm can make the tubes appear to be blocked.  Uterine infections caused by bacteria like chlamydia can cause scarring and blockage.

IUI won't work: If both your tubes are really blocked at the cornual ends (where they join the uterus) the IUI won't work as the egg and sperm can't get together. If one or both tubes was in spasm and not truly blocked then you still have a chance. Talk to your doctor - it's probably best to wait to see how your tubes look at the time of surgery before doing iuis.

Pretty close to it: The HSG test is done by inserting either a small catheter or a cannula into the cervix opening. You then inject contrast (xray dye) while watching on the xray fluoroscopy. You can see the contrast fill the uterine cavity and tubes. Sometimes the HSG will push out little tube plugs and open them but it will (if done properly) see if the tube is open or blocked.

Possibly: The hsg is accurate 90-95% of the time when compared to laparoscopy.  It is more likely to five inaccurate readings with risk factors including:
1. Painful periods
2. Painful intercourse
3. Pelvic infections.

ECTOPIC PREG: Your situation can best be managed by an OB who specializes in infertility.  The cause of your ectopic pregnancy may be a factor and there are tests to evaluate patency of the other tube, if warranted.

i did an hsg test and was found with blocked fallopian tubes. late on i went through a tubal wash  ,how do i know that they are unblocked??

Ask doctor: A HSG test is a x-ray that's taken while dye is pushed through your tubes.  Thus your doctor would know if the tube became unblocked during the study (x-ray).
