Ankle instability: Try an ace bandage over a cotton sock. do not apply too tight. Your foot should not feel numb or painful when you apply this bandage.

Probably.: There are lots of causes of ankle pain, but most problems are made worse by movement of the joint. If playing basketball increases your pain, wearing an ankle brace would be a very good idea. If you're truly injured, however, time off to rest and recover would be best, with the ankle brace used as support in future to prevent the injury from recurring.

Maybe not.: The brace is used to decrease your pain and increase stability.  If it is causing more swelling, it could mean that you are upright much more when you are wearing the brace and more swelling is generated, the brace is on incorrectly or is too tight, or that you don't need it.  Speak to the provider that gave you the brace.

Ankle injury: Let your parents know. It doesn't sound like you have been evaluated for this. If you have pain or impairment in function - then would recommend medical assessment to determine degree of sprain &amp; to rule out fracture. In the meantime use R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).

i am in an air cast for an ankle sprain. all its doing is causing swelling and pain. could i juat wear and ankle brace instead?

Possibly: If it is just an ankle sprain, and definitely not a fracture immobilization is not required definitively.  The main purpose would be to provide support and aid in your function.  So if the air cast is not helping, you could certainly try it without anything or go to a soft brace.  Check with your doctor first as I don't know the specifics of the injury, but you don't have to immobilize a sprain.

For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.
