Possibly: If it is just an ankle sprain, and definitely not a fracture immobilization is not required definitively. The main purpose would be to provide support and aid in your function. So if the air cast is not helping, you could certainly try it without anything or go to a soft brace. Check with your doctor first as I don't know the specifics of the injury, but you don't have to immobilize a sprain.
