A : A boil also known as a skin abscess is caused by a bacterial infection that starts in a hair follicle or sweat gland. Initially the skin turns red, and a painful bump develops. After about a week the lump starts to turn white as pus collects under the skin. If the boil is pretty small, like the size of a green pea, you can use warm compresses, and apply topical neosporin. If this does not work or it gets bigger then you need antibiotics. These can be prescribed by your doctor. If antibiotics don't work then something called an I&D (incision and drainage) may be done.

Warm compresses: I typically recommend warm compresses for possible infections and cold packs for injuries. Draw a circle around boil w/ball point pen or something that won't be easily scrubbed off. If boil grows beyond circle or becomes red and/or painful, then you need to seek medical attention immediately. If you're otherwise healthy, you might be able to fight off on your own.

Thanks for asking!: You need to go to a physician and be examined because this type of abcess, often referred to as a pilonidal cyst, can end up in a very serious infection for which significant surgical excision is required.  The sooner you are seen by a physician the better, and the less likelihood for more extensive surgical intervention.

Boils &amp; pimples: Not every boil, pimple etc eventually bursts. Some resolve on their own w/o rupturing &amp; leaking pus. Try applying warm compresses as hot as tolerated w/o burning yourself. And as frequently as possible. This might help your body to either heal it or drain on its own. Some collections of pus aka abscess do require your Family Doc to lance &amp; drain if warm compresses aren't enough.

Rupture: When a boil ruptures, generally drainage of pus-like discharge will ensue.  It's best to keep the affected area covered while the boil heals on its on.  There is nothing otherwise that needs to be done than to keep the affected area clean, dry and dressed.  It can take 1-2 weeks to completely heal, dependent on the size of the boil.

May need surgery!: Simply draining (even by a doctor), squeezing, or treating with antibiotics may not eliminate this infected sebaceous cyst. The cyst sac that produces sebum must be surgically excised to prevent its recurrence. If not, infection may actually end up destroying enough tissue that once healed it won't recur, but this is backwards "treatment." have a surgeon look at this and deal with it definitively!
