Yes!: See pediatrician or pcp. I used steam vaporizer with my own children. Sometimes it worked.

i nursed a baby whom has croup yesterday. he coughed in my face. today i have a sore throat, stuffy nose,  a feeling of fullness in my throat and fatigue. is it possible that adults could get croup? i haven't caughed yet...

Germ yes/croup no: Croup is a syndrome marked by the noisy cough/croup made by the rubbery airways of an infant/child. By age 8-9 the airways have firmed up and are no longer capable of the vibration /noise production. Adults can get the virus &amp; usually have a URI/laryngitis or other related symptoms.

Not sure why asking: Premature infant can have complications-most of which do not lead to death. Death from prematurity is now becoming very rare.  Survival is inversely proportional to gestational age.  Most deaths from prematurity are at less than 28 wks.  The real at risk group is 23-25 wks gestation.

Pain & hearing Loss: Anyone can get an ear infection. There are three types:1) outer - very painful and ear is tender to touch 2) middle - pain in ear but outer ear not tender to touch with decreased hearing 3) inner - usually no pain at all - can cause dizziness/hearing loss.

Virus yes, Sx no: The croup is a description of a group of similar respiratory illnesses that come to a common symptom.The deep cough of the 6m to 8yo sounds like a seal bark.The process is triggered by a variety of viruses that commonly cause uri's or laryngitis in adults.The reason for the barking noise is the vibrations made by the kids rubbery airway during a cough.The adult airway is to stiff to vibrate.

Infection is common: Croup is most likely caused by a para-influenza virus which is very common.  Children will typically  have the brash sounding cough.  The cough is worse at night and steaming the bathroom helps. Adults can get laryngitis from the same virus, but are less likely to have the typical croupy syndrome.  If your child has difficulty breathing, you may want to take your child into their pediatrician.

Inflammation: Croup causes inflammation around the vocal cords, resulting in narrowing of the airway, a characteristic barking cough and respiratory distress. At night, your baby’s airway becomes even narrower, as the head scrunches down against the chest. Also, the baby is not actively clearing his secretions when sleeping, which can cause choking episodes. Dry air from a heater also worsens the cough.

Yes and no: Croup is more an infection of kids 6m to 6 yrs although I have seen it in 8 yo. It involves a rubbery quality of the airway that creates the croup sound. This fades as kids age, the airway becoming more stiff.The germ more often causes laryngitis in older kids and adults.
