Please standardize: Who subscribed the Prilosec for 14 days.  If you self medicated it, please go to your family doctor to have a standard triple medication for h pylori. After that the symptoms will be gone.

Globus versus...: A ball or lump sensation in your throat past which you can easily swallow is called "globus"--a functional problem that acid blockers likely won't help. Nor would it likely address esophageal spasm, dysmotility, or eosinophilic esophagitis. Have you had manometry?Might want endoscopy for definitive biopsy +/- address peptic stricture that may constrict the swallowing tube &amp; benefit from dilation.

The answer...: ....To what will help with a distended abdomen depends entirely on the cause of the distention.  Probiotics are helpful with a lot of digestive issues, if you take them regularly.  The two meds you mention reduce stomach acid and are unlikely to help with distention.  If this is happening often, look to your diet for a solution.  This problem is often diet related.

i was treated for hpylori a month ago waiting on test to confirm eradication, on 20 mg prilosec 2x a day, still have heartburn and acid comes up throat even if i swallow my saliva, what can this mean? taking probiotics too?

:  Generally, H. pylori is asymptomatic unless there is a symptomatic ulcer present. It is likely that your symptoms are from uncontrolled acid reflux, given the description. Probiotics are unlikely to help. You should continue your current medications and supplement them with antacids such as Mylanta or Tums as needed for heartburn. Follow up with your G.I. doctor. nothing is soothing my acid reflux, have tried tums,pepcid ,probiotics. everything i eat causes acid to come back up and burn throat, and then throat swells. should i go to urgent care or try prilosec first?

: You can try high dose prilosec first, 40 mg, twice a day + anti-reflux measures: do not lie down within 2 hours after a meal and raising the head of your bed with bricks (8-10" higher). If pain is not improved after 2 weeks you need to see a gastroenterologist. If it improves, take prilosec for 2 months and indefinite anti-reflux measures and avoid foods which exacerbate the symptoms.

i have metastatic breast cancer to the bone. i am on tamoxifen and zometa. one of them is causing severe acid indigestion. prilosec, probiotics and digestive enzymes do nothing. can i try dgl? (deglycyrrhizinated licorice?

: Because DGL is a supplement so we could not check the interaction between these meds and supplement. I think you can try DGL for 2 weeks to see if it can alleviate your GI symptoms. If it is effective you need to notify  your oncologist about its use if continued. If it dose not work, your medications, either Tamoxifen or Zometa needs to be replaced, one by one, to figure out what the culprit is.

is it okay to take omeprazole and probiotics together daily?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but: Omeprazole use over long-term can cause medical problems down the road--increases infections, bone loss etc...But if this is what you need, then you need it.
It is ok to use both, however.
In general, don't take meds if you don't have to.
If you do, then regular follow-up with your doc who can help monitor you more closely and intervene when needed.
