i try to exercise daily for 30 minutes on an elliptical but sometimes my knees hurt. what to do, stop it altogether or do it every other day?

Elliptical Machine: If the pain you are getting is under your kneecap or in the front then it is probably due to inflammation. If the elliptical machine can be adjusted so that you take longer strides with less hip and knee flexion it may help. Also try knee strengthening exercises:  knee extensions, knee curls, leg presses and calf raises: 4 sets of 10-12 reps and increase the weight for each set.

was on elliptical and got weak in the knees  started to shake uncontrollably and couldn't stop.had a little difficulty breathing  what could cause this?

Over did it: Probably over done and became low in BP . Torn down the intensity of work out and also  do a cool down when getting off the machine to finish the exercises, drink water.

More cardio, but: With the arm movement, easier to achieve cardio benefits with a lower perception of exertion, since you use more muscles.  You will tone, but most strength gains go to the legs! safe and non-traumatic.  Great machines!

Sore calves: It depends on your exercise tolerance. If you are getting back into shape or training it can be normal to have sore calves. If you have risk factors for vascular disease, smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes then okay to get evaluated by your doc. Your doc will check you for pulses at your ankle. A simple vascular ultrasound can be ordered.

Time per week: Recent study  suggested that to maintain health in a young woman about 6 hours and 15 mins per week at target heart rate.  Best achieved at no less than 3 different different days.   So four days a week is adequate as long as it adds up to 6 hours and 15 minutes.  This does not include warm up, and cool down.

You : You can do a light workout but i would not push your body into total fat burning workout as that puts stress on your body.

Just get the blood flowing, hr around 120's.

Ill after exercise: May be over exertion or  dehydration post work out or reflux or unrelated ill. If  you drink a lot of water you can dilute your sodium so you should always alternate water with gatorade/juices, rarely rhabodmyolysis which is seen in marathon runners ( so you would have had to be on the elliiptical 1.5-2 hours). Since it is persisting seek medical attention today at doctor/urgent care

N/A: There is no particular exercise to target one area of fat stores. It just happens that, for some, it is one if the last areas to deplete. Try adding some weight training to increase your metabolism and ability to burn more calories at rest ...

Exercise!: Congratulations on losing 80 pounds although it's not clear to me how you did it w/o exercise. First go see your family doc & make sure you're otherwise healthy enough to exercise. You didn't mention your height so go to http://www.Nhlbi.Nih.Gov/guidelines/obesity/bmi/bmicalc.Htm to determine goal weight for your height. Finally, start riding a few minutes daily. Add a few minutes as that gets ea.

No: Elliptical machines are easier on the joints than running, so they are better on the joints of the feet.  Keep in mind it can still be strenuous exercise, so wear good shoes and orthotics if you need them.
