Yes, start slowly: Usually, we tell people to wait 8 weeks after hernia repair because of the risk of recurrence is higher during that time. However, if it has been 6 weeks you can and should have already started walking and you can start running, i would not lift weights for another 2 weeks.

Wait at least 8 wks: Returning to activity after umbilical hernia repair, depends on the size of the hernia and how it was repaired, any complicating medical conditions that you have or medications that you take, and your surgeon's preference.  Usually gradual return to regular activity is allowed after 8 weeks, but may be longer if there are any complicating factors.  More rigorous activities are allowed as tolerated.

28 months ago i had a s/p primary, non mesh repair for a 0.5 x 0.5 cm umbilical hernia without complications during / after the procedure. due to diet / exercise have lost 20 lbs of weight. could weight loss contribute / cause recurrence of hernia?

: Less likely recurrent umbilical hernia is due to weight loss with diet and exercise.

Control the hernia: You can do situps if you can hold your hernia in while you strain.  Don't do traditional situps but modified version to reduce strain.  Also an option is to have the hernia repaired, wait a few weeks for healing - and then do whatever you want! :)

Generally , one: would avoid any exercise for 6 weeks that would stress the repair site while just doing mild cardiovascular conditioning such as walking .  Once this initial phase has been passed, you should have a specific discussion with your surgeon as to what expectations in terms of an exercise regimen that may be anticipated including any restrictions that may be specific to your surgical repair.

Six weeks: Is usually enough time for adequate healing from hernia surgery for regular work outs.  But a lot depends on size of hernia, local findings at operation, integrity of repair, etc.  Ask your surgeon for specific recommendations.

Several weeks: The fatty tissue will shrink.
The bruising will resorb
some residual scar is common

follow instructions 
     avoid sit-ups
and abdominal strains for a couple of months to minimize recurrence.

Bad idea: "belly bands" are a bad idea in general, and especially after surgery. Nobody should use them!

ok so if i have an early stage umbilical hernia, the solution i received from a doctor here was to diet and exercise to lose weight so it can make the hernia go away, but is it ok to exercise if it i feel pain and have discharge? ive been resting?

: Umbilical hernia should not have discharge (exudate) and it should not cause pain unless there is incarcerated bowel.
Discharge and pain imply infection.

Bad Option: The purpose of a hernia belt is to prevent intestine from getting incarcerated ("stuck") within the hernia. The umbilicus is a very difficult if not impossible area to support in this manner; if anywhere, belts are better for inguinal (groin) hernias.  Not all umbilical hernias require surgery; but, if your symptoms are severe enough to consider a belt, you may want to see a hernia surgeon.
