i have hyperthrophic rhinitus since 2010, so i get stuffy nose all the time, preventing me from sleeping long at night. do i need sleep aids?

Accepted Answer

No: You need to consult an ENT doctor to see if you need surgery.  Hypertrophy of the nasal structures leads to occlusion of the nasal airway and should be corrected surgically.

my son age 8 years, suffer blocked ears and stuffy nose in winters,which effects his hearing abit.we use steam and antihistamine at night.
any precious advice to prevent and cure this,and to avoid being worse.

Depends: If you have a nasal steroid available it may help with irritant or allergic issues better than the antihistamine. Sometimes antihistamines thicken mucus &amp; may aggravate middle ear mucus retention/poor hearing. The steam may help if the humidity is dry during that season.

can a stuffy nose throughout night cause oxygen deprivation? i go to sleep with a little stuff nose and wake up with stuffy nose after 10 hours.

The nose knows: Your stuffy nose, while a nuisance that can cost you a good night's sleep, is no threat to adequate oxygenation. The physiologic drives to maintain adequate oxygen levels will cause you to breathe through your mouth if the nose is obstructed. This is why you wake up with a dry mouth as well as a stuffed nose.

how can i prevent a blocked stuffy nose?

Start simple: First start with a pure antihistamine to see if allergy may be playing a role. Zyrtec, Claritin or alavert are otc and worth trying. If after a few days there is no improvement then try a decongestant as well. If after a few days you are still blocked you should see your family doctor for a prescription nasal spray either a steroid or an antihistamine. If that doesn't help you need to see an ent.

i heard that if you sleep on your side, you are more likely to get headache from stuffy nose. is this true?

Not necessarily: When you lay down.. Either on your back or side, the turbinates (tissue on the side of you your nose - inside) swells up. This is why people feel stuffy with allergies, crying, etc. Some people will notice that the feeling of stuffiness changes from side to side as they turn over in bed. If the stuffiness is severe, it could lead to nasal and then sinus congestion which may lead to a headache.

i have had an extremely stuffy nose and nothing seems to really help and i am not sleeping very well at night  what should i do?

Need to see Doc: This could be related to nasal septal deviation, enlarged turnbinates, nasal polyps etc. Try saline nasal lavage, and see your doc and may be an ENT to make sure that there is no obstructive pathology.

See an ENT doc: If things have gotten this bad you need to see an ENT doctor. Find one that also specializes in sleep disorders and both conditions could be evaluated by the same person. Good luck to you.

See below: Nasal congestion does not mean you have sleep apnea, for sure. But it can exacerbate it. If you snore, have morning headaches, daytime sleepiness, gasp or choke for breath at night, wake up with a dry mouth, and/or have night time acid reflux, it may be sleep apnea. If so, please consult a sleep medicine specialist for evaluation. At minimum, your nasal congestion can be treated. Hope that helps!

Allergy: Use Flonase daily. Try zyrtec at night. No feather pillows

is sudafed safe for me? it's getting hard to sleep at night due to my permanent stuffy nose...

Accepted Answer

Need history: Cannot recommend any meds since don't know your health history and other medications you might be taking.  Also, Sudafed is normally a daytime , non-drowsy type of medication which may hinder your sleep.
