Milk?: Infants need breast milk or formula till 12 months. Cow's milk & milk products should be limited to 16-21 ounces/day after a year to avoid anemia & constipation. If he has hard, pebbly stools or strains to have bm's, see your pediatrician, who can also tell you if his weight/length ratio is average.

First examine diet: Theree are many foods that commonly cause constipation which is having too little water in the stool.  The most common are rice (all of the grains like barley, oats, etc.) milk, bananas.  If they are part of your diet eliminate them for 3-4 days and your problem will probably go away.  Yes, the medicine can cause the problem but diet is much more likely.

Laxative is okay: Keto is one of the fad diets. If it works for you fine.You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods.

ANSWER: First keep taking risperidal (risperidone) at the dose your dr ordered. Then try a stool softener. If the dr says so, try a laxative - but laxatives are trouble when taken all the time. Drink lots of water.
Talk with your dr about this.
It's not a trivial problem and your dr should know and help.

Difficulty passing soft stool is what we call "outlet constipation", meaning the mechanics of passing stool are not working well.  Can be narrowing of the anal canal or lower rectum, spasm of the pelvic floor muscles or conditions such as rectocele.  There are several colon and rectal surgeons near you.  See one.
