tooth extracted 3 days ago. seems like my clot is sinking in. is this normal? i'm still in pain, but i don't think it's dry socket, which is my worry.

It is normal: Typically, symptoms for a dry socket develop 3-4 days after a tooth extraction. However, practicing good oral hygiene may prevent dry socket. If concerned, see your oral surgeon for post-op eval.

i stopped using gauze only ten minutes after a wisdoms tooth extraction. will a blood clot still form? or will i get dry socket?

Dry Socket: Blood clot will most likely form. The gauze does not prevent the clot from falling out. Avoid gargling and rinsing aggressively for a few days and you will probably be fine. Any problems please call your surgeon.

bottom molar removed 9 days ago. no pain, but socket looks filled with yellowish stuff. is it still the clot i'm seeing? been rinsing w/salt water, but could it be food? photos of normal healing at 9 days just show indented gum, no scab like mine?

: You appear to be healing fine, especially since you have no pain or swelling. If you are overly concerned have the oral surgeon take a look.

i just got 5 teeth extractions and was still kind of bleeding when the nurse put my temp.dentures in with adhesive. i am worried that when i take them out after 24 hours, i pull the clot out and get dry socket?

: The bleeding is a good sign of no coming down with a dry socket. The dentures act as compression bandage over the bleeding sockets and promote healing. The clot will be well formed after 24 hours, so just follow post extraction instructions.

Dry Socket: It usually takes some time for the discomfort to set in, but there is not cut and dry rule, everyone is different.  Just because what looks like a clot has come out, doesn't mean there still isn't some left inside the socket, enough to keep things ok.

Soon: if clot rejected normally there will be discomfort and healing will be slow.  There are treatments for discomfort such as dry socket paste placed by a dentist

Shortly after: Usually a dentist will recommend keeping pressure on the extraction site for 30 minutes after an extraction.  You should be able to see a blood clot forming within that time.

Yes: The typical presentation of a dry socket is one in which the blood clot has dislodged from the socket. However, dry socket is really just an inflammation in the bone surrounding the socket, and this can happen either with or without a clot. Analgesic medication and socket dressings are helpful in relieving symptoms until the natural healing process leads to resolution of the condition.

Would not be a clot: Having a dry socket after a dental extraction means that the clot has become dislodged.  Just like when you have a cut on your skin and a scab forms, you need to have a clot form over the extraction site. If the clot becomes dislodged, you will have the bone and underlying tissues exposed which causes the pain.  Clots normally become dislodged due to rinsing, spitting, smoking, straw drinking.

In a dry socket: There is no clot and that is why they hurt so much. The clots job is to act like a ban aid to protect the bone while the tissue heals. When lost they are very painful and need to be treated by the dentist daily for two-three weeks while the tissue fills in.
