i had a bone density test and it said i have generalized skeletal osteopenia..   i'm a little worried i'm 56 years old. is bone loss common at my age?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Everyone experiences bone loss to a greater or lesser degree as they age.  In women, due to hormonal changes, it accelerates after menopause.  Osteopenia is decreased bone density, but not to the degree of osteoporosis.  Speak with your doctor, there may be lifestyle modifications that will help with your bone density, and possibly medications, depending on your clinical situation.

Yes: Depends on level of instrumentation on whether your spine will be able to be tested and compared to previous.  Hips will still be able to be tested in order to risk stratify you.

Osteoporosis: There are 2 definitions: Tscore less than -2.5 by DXA scan or osteoporotic fracture such as your mom sustained. Bed rest is a bad idea as it leads to muscular atrophy &amp; functional debility. Interventional radiologists, orthopedists &amp; neurosurgeons can perform kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty to manage pain &amp; prevent worsening compression. Nasal calcitonin has also been used to reduced pain.

33 percent drop in bone density in two years, due to surgical menopause and meds.  will it continue to drop rapidly?

Accepted Answer

There is a rapid : Decline in bone density after menopause du to loss of estrogen.   A 33% loss is excessive, however.  This may be do to an error in measurement by the device, that is my guess.  See if the number is correct, if u have osteoporosis start treating.  Low dose estradiol, for those without a contraindication, helps hot flashes and help prevent further loss.  Raloxifene at be a good idea if no estrogen.

i took omeprazole for 3 years , if it had effected bone density, will this return to normal upon stopping the medication?or is that bone loss longterm

No issues: It is highly unlikely that a 38 year old would have experienced any bone loss after 3 years of omeprazole. Do not worry.

my 64 years old moms bone density reading is -4.0 (osteoporosis level). how much calcium she need to supplement per day?

Accepted Answer

Let me explain: Is it -4.0 if that is the case it is very low.
Treatment:
lifestyle modifications
consuming adequate calcium and vitamin d.(ca 2500 mg daily, 50, 000.00 unit per week).Blood test have to be done to monter the condition.

 Performing weight-bearing exercise—
other medication(estradiol, or calcitonin...)

i want to know what the long term side effects are from lucrin injection. i am 37 years old and already sitting with low bone density, osteopenia and have a lot of pain all the time. i am on vit d and calcium meds, got a calcium drip as well.

Not appropriate: Lucrin is not appropriate treatment for osteopenia. Vitamin D and calcium are fine. You need to engage in weight bearing exercises to improve bone health.

is it normal to see a drop in bone density from -2.4 to -3.7 (z score -2.6) in two years after ooph and arimidex (anastrozole) and not to be given treatment?

Accepted Answer

No: I would definitely recommend treatment (probably a bisphosphonate, unless there are contraindications). Some doctors would have started treatment two years ago knowing that you already had osteopenia and were going to start an aromatase inhibitor. I suggest that you see your endocrinologist.

Spinal pathology: Pain in the buttocks, going down the legs after walking for awhile is commonly caused by arthritis in the spine, which presses on the nerves causing the pain.  Low bone calcium (osteopenia or osteoporosis) can lead to bone fracture, commonly in the spine (compression fractures) or hip fractures, which hurt with both motion and weight bearing. Hip fracture pain is felt inthe groin.

Accepted Answer

: Exercise, especially weight bearing exercise. Have the recommended intake of Vitamin D and calcium. It will not increase bone density beyond what is normal but will help you in the long run.
