It depends: For most women, age 40.  For women with a history of breast cancer in a mother, sister, or daughter, possibly younger.  This depends on the age the relatives developed breast cancer.  Ultrasound and MRI are better tests in young women with dense breasts. For women with a suspicious lump, a mammogram, ultrasound, and possibly breast MRI should be done regardless of age.

Once a year: American cancer society and american college of radiology recommend yearly mammogram after age 40. Yealy clinical breast examination and monthly self examination are also recommended.

Screening starts at: 40 years old as long as there is no other risk factors.  Being high risk may benefit from a consultation with a breast clinic to optimize a screening plan.

Obviously, if there are concerns (pain, mass, fullness) then please see your doctor asap and follow their recommendations. If there are symptoms, then it is not screening, but it is imaging for diagnosis.

No: Screening should start around 40, potentially earlier if you are high risk.  If you have a lump, see your doctor.  Ultrasound would be the first imaging modality of choice for someone of your age.

Yes!: For general screening, 24 is too young.  If a doctor feels a lump, or has another reason to be concerned, a mammogram might be reasonable. However, breast tissue is very dense in young women, and it's difficult to see abnormalities on their mammograms. So it's really not a good test for women in this age range.  It's also radiation exposure, and it will add up over the years!

Between 45 &amp; 50: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force mammogram guidelines recommend women begin screening at age 50 and the American Cancer Society recommends women begin screening at age 45.

Depends: You should start with your doctor's exam.  If you have lumps, and if you have any family history of breast cancer, let your doctor know.  You may need both a mammogram and ultrasound.  Please do not take chances.

No mammogram yet.: First of all, the probability of a teenager getting breast cancer is less than one in a million, so there is no need for a mammogram(until age 40). If your grandmother is the only member of your family with breast or ovarian cancer, chances are that you have no increased risk for breast cancer as compared to any other woman in the US. Nevertheless, you are never too young to learn self-examination.

i am an 82 year old male. i have been on 5mg. of finasteride for six months and have breast tenderness on one nipple. my doctor told me to stop it and i might have to have a mammogram. could i get breast cancer in six months of taking finasteride?

More likely: Is gynecomastia which is benign breast enlargement and is notoriously happening as fast as few weeks to few months. Breast malignancy cannot be ruled out otherwise without appropriate tests , but is less likely
