Hello docs, is 24 yrs old too early to get a mammogram?

Yes!: For general screening, 24 is too young. If a doctor feels a lump, or has another reason to be concerned, a mammogram might be reasonable. However, breast tissue is very dense in young women, and it's difficult to see abnormalities on their mammograms. So it's really not a good test for women in this age range. It's also radiation exposure, and it will add up over the years!

Yes, unless: If you are a BRCA carrier it may be appropriate for you to begin screening soon. If you have a lump or other symptom, see your doctor, ultrasound would be the first imaging test of choice in your age group. Otherwise, the American College of Radiology, American Cancer Society, and others recommend screening starting at age 40.
