how often should i use an enema for constipation? are the fleet enemas (sodium bisphosphate) ok twice a week?

Ok: To use twice a week as long as you don't have any kidney problems, heart issues or electrolyte problems like low or high potassium levels etc.Do no use for more than one week.Follow instructions in package insert.Discuss with your doctor other safer , easier options like tablets , pills etc.

Doctor can recheck: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber plus water, Miralax, (polyethylene glycol), Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives... Doctor can examine and might prescribe Linzess, etc...

Not a bright idea.: Try suppository instead. Enough fluid, avoid constipating food and med.

Yes  you could: Pregnancy is not a contraindication to use enema. However, I suggest you try again Senna in any presentation and increase you fiber (fruits and vegetablels) and water intake. Take care!

Pain/ constipation ?: Studies show a 7 wk old fusses an average of 2hrs/d for no identified reason. They fuss using their breathing muscle which makes the belly bulge &amp; hard. Many assume they have pain. If stools are soft they are not constipated. If they are 1 oz of undiluted prune juice 1-3X/d can loosen them up in 2-3 days. You can do either but may find they do little.

No: Enemas used longterm reduce the body's natural urge to evacuate and you can become dependent on them. If you have n't discussed this with your physician, you need to. Also consider craniosacral therapy, chiropractic/osteopathic care, and chinese medicine as each offers additional insight into why you might be constipated. Also some foods can be constipating.

Fleet: Plain or mineral oil is ok. However, you need to be examined to determine the cause of your recent constipation, with a colonoscopy if you haven't had one in the past few years. Also try eating a high fiber diet and drinking more fluids and less caffeine and alcohol both of which contribute to constipation.

Depends on cause: It depends on what other meds you have tried - a variety of new meds exist such as polyethylene glycol and even newer ones in the last year or so that require a prescription you should see your doctor again.
