Depends on cause: It depends on what other meds you have tried - a variety of new meds exist such as polyethylene glycol and even newer ones in the last year or so that require a prescription you should see your doctor again.

Constipation: If you have not had a colonoscopy, i suggest you to get one. Make sure to have high fiber diet, adequate hydration. Take fiber supplement, otc, citrucel, one tablespoon in 8 oz of water, drink daily. Increase exercise. Can use otc MiraLAX one tablespoon in 8 oz of water once to twice a day. If not effective, suggest discuss with GI doctor for possible Amitiza (lubiprostone) or linzess.
