Pterygium: You may have a pterygium or a pinguecula which are benign growths on the sclera or white part of your eye. See an ophthalmologist to be sure. Artificial tear drops may help with the redness.

Irritation: I recommend you visit an ophthalmologist for this. And start using some artificial tears. But the ophthalmologist who examines you can conduct a full exam and see if anything in the back of your eyes is causing this. Could just be a case of dry eyes.  I also recommend you start using sunglasses more often.

i feel thirsty all the time and i often wake up with dry eyes. i am not on any medication and dont have any other symptoms of things like diabetes. can sun exposure cause me to be thirsty?

: If you are sweating a lot with sun exposure and you do not drink enough, you may feel thirsty because of dehydration but this condition is uncommon in American daily life because water is plenty. If dry mouth is the main symptom of your thirstiness, then along with dry eyes and your age + gender, sicca syndrome should be ruled out. Good luck.

They usually do not go away on their own, but they also almost never lead to complications.

Don't think so: At least in med school we were taught that sunburns prior to age 21  were associated with a higher risk of skin cancer over one's lifetime. It has been a while since I reviewed the data but I don't have any reason to doubt it.
