Short term: Sleep aids are generally  for 'short term' use. Short term may be defined as days-weeks depending on the situation.  I have a patients who have had 'sleep studies' and have been diagnosed with sleep disorders requiring long-term trazodone.  I also have a few patients who have taken zolpidem (ambien) for 'years' so there is a great deal of variation. The fda approved amien-cr for 'long-term'use'.

can i safely use ambien for sleep, then xanax (alprazolam) during the day for anxiety?  can i safely switch between  xanax (alprazolam) or ativan if i find one works better?

Your question sounds: like there may not be a prescribing physician involved with this, or at least you don't say anything about the advice of that physician. Benzodiazepines are not necessarily the best treatment for chronic anxiety states like generalized anxiety disorder, panic and especially not PTSD. Antidepressants work without producing tolerance and with much less of a risk of dependency. Talk to the prescriber

Why chance it: Prescription drugs are rarely studied in pregnant women, and since this drug enters your brain, it will,also enter your baby's brain. Forget ambien, and take L tryptophan or melatonin instead. Keep the bedroom dark and quiet, only,use BR for sex or sleep. No TV, reading and especially no iPad, computer, or cell,phone before sleep

Yes: The half life of Ambien is 4-6 hours, so you should be fine, but it also depends on the amount of xanax (alprazolam) you are taking. Consult with your doctor first.

Ask your own doctor: Please ask the doctor who prescribed this medicine for you.  S/he knows you and your case best.  I hope your doctor also talked with you about sleep hygiene and you are employing those suggestions before relying on Ambien (zolpidem) alone.  It does have side effects such as activation and sleepwalking in some patients.

Another Ambien (zolpidem) 5 mg.: Both medications help you sleep. You can take another 5 mg. Of ambien, (zolpidem) lie down and try counting sheep. You're very anxious which prevents you from sleeping. Seriously, drink a glass of warm milk, go to bed, turn of the lights, listen to soft music and just relax. You are trying too hard to fall asleep.

Cloneazepam ambien (zolpidem): wow you are taking two medications that work on the Benzo receptor. Your Ambien (zolpidem) is far too high and current recommendation is that ambien (zolpidem) should not exceed 6.25mg and only to be used short duration. So I guess its not okay to use both at the same time.

: You bet it does.  Over time Ambien produces tolerance and higher doses are required to induce sleep.  Eventually, works poorly at best, and you do not sleep in addition.   Why not have your doctor engage you into a "sleep hygiene" program?
