How many nights in a row can i safely use ambien (zolpidem) 5mg?

Short term: Sleep aids are generally for 'short term' use. Short term may be defined as days-weeks depending on the situation. I have a patients who have had 'sleep studies' and have been diagnosed with sleep disorders requiring long-term trazodone. I also have a few patients who have taken zolpidem (ambien) for 'years' so there is a great deal of variation. The fda approved amien-cr for 'long-term'use'.
