even though i've stopped consuming empty calories from alcohol i've gained weight since quitting, why is this happening?

Maybe a new problem?: Usually, one continues to gain weight because of eating or drinking other calories ... And is still taking more calories than he uses in one day. For example, if one was getting 400 excess calories per day while on alcohol, and now getting 100 excess calories per day off alcohol, he will still gain weight due to the 100 excess daily calories. A doctor can evaluate & rule out new medical problems.

No alcohol: Alcohol is a simple fatty chemical that the body can very easily turn into the typical fat tht is stored in fat cells.  Alcohol is ethanol and is the same in beer, wine, whisky, tequila etc.  The most appropriate answer to this in my medical opinion is this: drink water instead. No calories in a glass of water.  So alcohol is bascially a fat and will make you fat like sugar in a soda.

It depends: Alcohol has about 8 kcal of energy compared to sugar with about 4kcal of energy.   So it could be that a drink with lower alcohol could be considered safer because it had less alcohol and hence prevented unnecessary weight gain or other complications.  Alcohol is a sedative so it can be argued it helps slow down metabolism.   This is marketing!  lite beer has likely killed a lot of people.

It such a situation, it may be a good idea to stop alcohol unless one is a daily drinker and at risk for withdrawal symptoms. Pure alcohol has about 7 calories per gram, sugar or carbs has 4 calories per gram, and fat has 9!
