2-6 weeks: Depending on the type of graft chosen, the knee can be swollen for anywhere between 2-6 weeks.  It can last longer if the patient does not progress well with physical therapy, a very important component of a successful ACL reconstruction!

Wait and see : ice elevate modify activities for a period of time such as two weeks.  If pain persists especially pain with twisting or deep squat then seek evaluation.  Sometimes with a fall or direct blow a bone bruise can develop and can cause short lived symptoms that would improve with time and conservative care.

It : It will usually take a few weeks for the swelling to subside.  If you have some arthritis as well as a meniscus tear it can take longer for the fluid in your knee to be absorbed.  At two weeks post-operation i would not be too worried about having an occasionally swollen knee.

Elevation: Keep your foot elevated when possible. When in bed put a pillow under it. Talk to your surgeon.

i had athroscopic knee surgery, acl recons. and meniscus 5days ago. ankle is now swollen and bruised, i believe hematoma. it is very painful. danger?

Not generally: It is hard to say that there is no danger here. Bruising and swelling around the ankle is possible after acl reconstruction, but is not the norm. It definitely reflects bleeding from somewhere. The acl tunnel in the front of the leg can be a source of bleeding. Bleeding that starts in the back of the knee is much less typical and warrants a visit to your surgeon, especially with the "very painful".

Sore 1-2 wks: I tell my patients to take it easy for the first 3-4 days, elevate to heart level, ice a lot and limited walking around for the first week so that it doesn't swell early on.  Pain can be moderate first week. Generally much better 2nd weeks pretty good by week 3-4. I inject cortisone week 4-6 if not significantly better.

Sometimes: Some meniscal tears become asymptomatic without surgery. Generally, such tears occur in patients over the age of 30 and are not associated with trauma as they result from degenerative changes in the meniscus (think: gray hair or wrinkle). Tears in young people, associated with ligament injuries, and with symptoms (swelling, locking, instability, pain) lasting more than 6 weeks require surgery.

Typically 4-6 weeks: Most routine arthroscopic meniscus procedure take about 4-6 weeks for
recovery.
Usually you are wlaking well within a few
days
but it usually takes 4-6 weeks to rehab
