Ankle Sprain: It may heal on its own with rest, ice, compression and elevation and a gradual return to your normal activities. However, a period of time in a boot or use of crutches may be necessary depending on the severity. The dr will usualy : Base his decision o palpating the region of injury to see if you have pain, place ankle thru range of motion and watch you walk and ask for your feedback. This coupled with the amount of time that passed will help make his decision. 3.4-4 weeks is certainly sufficient time if your not feeling pain. It is important to do strength training excercises afterwards. I still say get clearance from Dr.

Symptoms?: You do not mention why you would return before your scheduled visit. If you are having pain or new symptoms, call your Ortho doc to,discuss ASAP. If you are just in a rush to remove the cast/boot, it may be too soon. Generally your doc would have the return visit timed when healing had occurred, and changes can be made.

You : You can engage in any upper body activity you like, and can also swim.  I would not engage in any activity that involves you standing or putting any pressure on your foot / ankle or leg.  That would include cycling.

: High ankle sprains involves the anterior tibia-fibula ligament. This type of sprain requires very aggressive treatment immobilizing for a minimum of 4 weeks. I would immobilize on crutches for 4-5 weeks and re-evaluate at that time   When you bear weight the talus helps to separate the bones . If this fails surgical consideration will be needed.

Sprained toe ?'s: Any "sprain" of a joint, even in a toe will take weeks to completely heal, and any strenuous activity may aggravate the sprain and extend the time of healing, remaining uncomfortable.  Ask your physician about taking ibuprofen or a similar non-narcotic medication.

Get an xray b4 boot: Best to get an xray of ankle since pain hasn't resolved w/time. In other words, go see your Family Doc for evaluation.

Pain: If you have pain walking or pain when touching the bony part of the ankle, you should get an xray to make sure there is no fracture. I would also suggest ice, advil (ibuprofen) and a looser boot.
