how long does it take to know results of your thyroid biopsy?

Can vary: It depends upon where it is sent & how much testing is done.   In-town pathologists will usually give an report in 1-3 working days; out-of-town pathologists in 2-5 working days.  If genetic analysis is being done as well, this can take 1-2 weeks.

previous hemi-thyroid. now, multiple small nodules and one heterogenous 12x6x5mm complex, peri.vasc. surgeon says come back 1 yr. too small to biopsy?

Not really.: It would be possible to biopsy this, particularly with the use of ultrasound guidance.  If this worries you given your history, you should not be afraid to seek a second opinion from another ENT surgeon or endocrinologist.

it's been over a year since my last thyroid biopsy it came back with hurthle cells calcification and hypervascular  but benign .second opinion ?

Follow up: You need to have a repeat ultrasound to see if the nodule has changed since the last biopsy. If it's the same or getting smaller, you don't need to have another biopsy. I recommend seeing the doctor who did the original biopsy. That person knows your history and will be able to follow this nodule for you. The choice to seek a second opinion is always yours but i'm not sure it's needed at this time.

had lump on thyroid biopsy came back ok. another lump came up within 3 weeks now had partial thyroidectomy. what's the chance new lump is cancer?

Not high: Off course the risk for someone to develop cancer will depend on different things like your personal history, your family history, history of radiation the neck area, environmental exposure etc. Majority of the thyroid nodule is benign. The risk for thyroid nodule to become cancerous is only about 5-10%. Discuss further with your doctor.

after the anesthetic of the thyroid biopsy wore off i have a lot of "air" i am "burping" which causes pain on my upper back and lungs, is this normal?

: Are you forcing yourself to belch?  Doing so makes you swallow air and makes you belch all the more. The back discomfort could be caused by air in the esophagus but can also be from positioning of the neck and upper back to make the thyroid more accessible for biopsy. If you experience esophageal discomfort try taking mylanta for acid and gas relief. See your MD.if not improved.

i had a thyroid biopsy done it came back as non diagnostic. this is what the report says as well. not sure how this reads
these demonstrate rare neutrophils and lymphocytes, with a large amount of blood, and are essentially devoid of epithelial cells?

: Translation= they did not find anything bad going on, just random cells of various types. Blood would be an expected finding in such procedures. Epithelial cells are what is on the outside, and would not be expected when sampling the inside. Discuss this with your doc.

i have a hard painless lump on the left side of my neck. blood results have come back normal. currently awaiting an appointment for a biopsy. should i?

Tissue's The Issue: Assessment of the formed elements in your blood along with serum assays do not rule out the existence of a benign or malignant tumor, congenital lesion, autoimmune process or atypical infection. A biopsy is needed. Sometimes imaging may help narrow the differential but finally a biopsy is likely to settle this question.

Thyroid biopsy: Hard to answer.  No test is perfect. With an ultrasound-guided needle bx, the pathologist looks at the sample of cells that he gets. He may not get a good sample. In some kinds of thyroid cancer, it is hard to distinguish normal from abnormal cells.  Sometimes decisions need to be made in spite of "test results", i.e. A judgement call.  Talk to your endocrinologist.

Not bad: This one depends on the skill of the doctor doing the biopsy.  It can be scary, but the soreness lasts maybe a day or two.

what does it mean to find fungus in a thyroid biopsy?

Accepted Answer

Thyroid biopsy: I guess it is conceivable that a disseminated fungal infection could involve the thyroid, but I would be more concerned that the sample was contaminated, or it was a lab error of some kind.
