Can get habituated: I don't recommend someone your age to take chronic otc meds to initiate or maintain sleep.  Other causes have to be ruled out.  I would start with sleep hygiene.

Rather benign med: Benedryl is the main sleep ingredient in most otc sleep products  & as an otc med it has been show to be relatively safe, even  when taken over a long term. That said, you may want to meet with your pcp, have a regular checkup & discuss any other symptoms that could point to a treatable condition that is interfering with natural sleep.

Short term ok: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) should not be used long term for insomnia. It may get you to sleep but over time it will disrupt your deep sleep or rem sleep. That could be detrimental to your health.

Not a great: combination for sleep.  Combining two antihistamines benadryl (diphenhydramine) and doxalamine as well as a cough medicine is not a good idea. You could just use benadryl (diphenhydramine) which is diphenhydamine to sleep.  It is the active ingrediant in most OTC sleep medications.  Or better yet try some melatonin.

Regular dose.: The onset of benadryl, when taken by mouth, can be anywhere from 15-45 minutes, so it will not help you fall asleep "fast" necessarily. The usual allergy dose is what is recommended, 25-50 mg. It is not appropriate for short flights, though, as the sleepiness will make getting OFF the plane very difficult. Only use for flights 4-6 hours or longer. Do a test dose before your trip!

Learn to sleep: Your brain has forgotten how to sleep. You need to relearn this skill. Partially that will entail getting drug free and some nights of insomnia. Learning good sleep hygiene is part of this. Perhaps a sleep doctor can help. Or a drug and alcohol treatment program would be helpful. Many of them recognize Benadryl (diphenhydramine) as a potential addictive medicine in this scenario.

Sleep habit: Assuming you have not been consuming caffeine after 3 p.m. and have no problem falling asleep, we will need to know your age and other medical conditions to provide you a guess.  As we age, sleep tends to become more irregular and taking long naps will worsen it.  Prostate issue , pain, nasal obstruction, sleep apnea, and anxiety also keep people awake. Talk to your doctor.

Sure: Zolpidem ( Ambien) and diphenhydramine ( Benadryl) act on different receptors in the brain and it would not be to much medication if you took it  3 hours before. Please remember that you need to give yourself 8 hours  after these to sleep. otherwise you might be drowsy the next day
