Side Effect: The topical scabies treatments do actually cause itching because they are irritating to the skin itself.  You can try topical cortisone 1% as well as zyrtec (cetirizine) antihistamine as needed for itching, then retreat with scabies treatment if not resolved within a week.  Good Luck!

: The initial response to scabies is often triggered by localized skin reaction to the mite and focal skin irritation. Over time, the body develops a serum allergic response to the poop in the mite burrows which can last for weeks after all the mites are dead. Eventually this serum response, that can trigger hives over the whole body will fade. Duration depends on the degree of the initial infection

Itching from scabies: The pruritus or itching which comes from scabies can be intense even after treatment has been given.  If you are having itching from the treatment this can be because of skin irritation if you had the cream or an allergy.  You may have an additional rash in addition to the rash from the scabies infection.  If the itching becomes worse consult with your health care provider.

: The itch of scabies is a reaction to the poop they deposit under the skin in their burrows. That itch will persist long after they are all dead. In time (days/weeks) the skin sheds this debris and returns to normal. Scrubbing the areas can help reduce the constant stimulation by residual materials. A re-check to look for new active burrows may be worthwhile.

Some basics: The rash of scabies is triggered by an allergic reaction to the poop the mite leaves in its burrows &amp; the dead bodies of the mites. The rash &amp; the related itching can take weeks to heal after the mites are all dead. Failure to kill all the mites with the lotion or pill may be a possibility, but re-infection from some unexpected source is also possible.

The same!: You will probably look about the same as before the treatment, although your skin may feel a little drier.  Redness, flaking and scabbing at the sites of the previous scabies infestation will heal with time.  Moisturizers should help hasten this process.

Depends: In true scabies the mite dies after it is exposed to treatment (permethrin) fairly soon after treatment. This particular symptom can take weeks to "cool down" and may require topical or even oral steroids.
