i have a deviated septum and chronic rhinitis/congestion all year long. ent told me to spray flonase corticosteroid. if i use this daily will it damage my nose or weaken my immune system? does it make anxiety disorders worse?

: Locally applied steroid nasal sprays are metabolized (used &amp; broken down) at the site of application. No amount in high enough quantity to affect your immune system is absorbed into the blood. It will also not damage your nose if used as directed. These meds are available over the counter in many forms because they have a proven safety profile over many years before OTC status was granted.

Yes: It usually raise the total WBC especially on the neutrophils while reducing the % of lymphocytes and eosinophils.

Polyps: Nasal polyps can be responsive to nasal steroids but it takes larger doses of the nasal steroids.  If the nasal steroids do help the polyps and they are stopped there is a good chance that the polyps will regrow.

Yes: There are no known interactions between citalopram (Celexa) and corticosteroid nasal sprays.

i have sjogren's syndrome and i keep getting rhinitis, are there any ways to solve this issue? was given nasal corticosteroid but it caused nosebleed

Rhinitis: With sjorgen's syndrome, and nose bleeds when using nasal steroids, you need to moisturize your nasal passages well before using the steroid spray, in sjorgen's the mucus membranes are dry, so use saline nasal wash liberally before using the spray, use it right with the nozzle straight in your nose slightly directed towards your ear not towards your eye, away from the septum to avoid nose bleeds

Not as much as oral: Nasal corticosteroids are thought to have fewer and less severe complications as taking oral steroids. Inhaled steroids can cause hoarseness and candidiasis, oral fungal infection. Less studies have shown the degree of side effects such as skin bruising, skeletal bone loss, or diabetes which can definitely be associated with oral steroids. Still recommend a break in their use for short periods

can you take a monteleukast with a 2nd gen antihistamine, and nasal corticosteroid? would you be able to add an additional oral decongestant like psudoephedrine to this if decongestion is a concern? is there a risk of rebound congestion?

: yes/no. All of the meds cited work in different pathways to  provide relief. Rebound congestion is a factor with nasal sprays that include a med that constricts the blood vessels. Over time the constriction injures the blood vessels &amp; they leak, causing congestion. This is not a feature of oral meds like pseudoephedrine.

Yes you can: It is less  likely  to  lose its  effect . However  you may require leukotriene inhibitors and short  time  antihistamines for severe exacerbations.

why do some people do not respond at all to corticosteroid nasal sprays( fluticasone,mometasone)? do steroids fail to reduce inflammation in such people?does it also mean that steroid would be unable to cause any side effect in such bodies/people?

Accepted Answer

: It doesn’t mean that the steroids are not decreasing inflammation. It could mean that there is another etiology for the symptoms. For example, if a nasal polyp is causing the symptoms, the polyp may need to be removed to treat the symptoms. So, if the nasal steroids are not helping, see an ear/nose/throat specialist for evaluation/treatment. Best of luck to you!

i am using a corticosteroid nasal spray for allergies but now my tonsils feel irritated and dry. no signs of swelling. could the spray cause it? if yes should i discontinue it? i can't get in touch with me ent until monday.

Steroids are drying.: Assuming this is not an early indication of a tonsil infection (tonsillitis), it could be an effect of the steroids, which do have a drying tendency.  Remember, even though they are sprayed nasally, the steroid can end up dripping down the back of the throat and upon the tonsils.
