Depends...: There's an old adage that says it's better to break something than sprain something, and that's basically because soft tissue injuries always take longer to heal.  Make sure that you have been evaluated properly and that you have given your injury enough time to heal.  Ask your doc about proper ankle bracing too.  If it's more than 3 months from the time of injury, get re-evaluated.

Professional ...: Yes, one can still have pain and swelling five weeks after torn tendons and ligaments in the ankle and shin. Professional attention by PCP/ Ortho Consult and or Physical Therapist is needed to pilot one through potential chronic challenges that might arise if not adequately taken care of.

i have a high ankle sprain but my orthopedic doctor didn't take an mri. should i get a second opinion? if my ligament is torn will it heal on its own?

A matter of trust: It all comes down to trust.  If you saw an orthopedic surgeon (especially if they specialize in lower extremity) or a sports medicine physician and you trust them, then a second opinion is likely not going to change the diagnosis.  However, please discuss the value of the MRI with your doctor based on how confident (s)he is with the diagnosis.  If very confident, then MRI again less likely to help.

MSM 1000mg: is a low dose if taken daily. There are some patients that notice a change in their menstruation cycles when taking this...usually it is a skipped period or a lighter one.  Fish oil, Vit C and MSM are all excellent supplements to take as long as they don't interact with any other meds you may be on. With any ankle surgery I typically have my patients taking similar dosing before and after!

R.I.C.E.: Rest, ice initially and later heat, compression( ace bandage, taping brace etc) and elevation.

Who is taking care : Of the dislocation?/ fracture?
How is that being fixed? Any damaged ligament will likely be addressed in the same manner. So if surgery is considered, then the surgery will deal with the ligament. If the ankle is being casted then the ligament will heal in the same manner the bone will.

: Ask your orthopedic surgeon. Make sure you go for physical therapy after surgery. Lead a healthy style and at a young age you should recover soon.

Stabilize the ankle: Ligaments have no blood supple and as a result don't heal. You need to have your ankle scoped with possible repair of the ligament with excision of the thickened tissues covering the ankle (synovium)

Brace: Ligaments can take just as long as bone. So 6-8 weeks is the time frame i use. I would highly recommend making sure you brace the ankle during the recovery period.
