i've been diagnosed with bronchitis on friday. i also went for a lung x-ray because my left side pain when i cough. x-ray was clear. dr prescribed coamoxiclav but i don't really believe in antibiotics. i'm not getting better. should i take the antib?

Yes: If you are not improving a bacterial illness is possible. Use yogurt or a probiotic while on the Medication, since it may cause GI side effects. Monitor for fever while on the medication. Report worsening or fever to your physician.

i have heavy growth of klebsiella pneumoniae in my sputum culture but it is sensitive to almost all the antibiotics, i have been prescribed ceftum 500 x2 daily, how long it will take to get clear up? chest xray is fine, no symptoms apart frm cough .?

: Could be sooner but might be ten days to two weeks. Any other symptoms? A cephalosporin is a common treatment for uncomplicated community acquired respiratory infection

Have you considered: Given that this has been ongoing for 4 years, and apparently has not deteriorated to anything worse, have you considered Vocal Cord Dysfunction? This commonly goes under diagnosed, because it requires a scope to take a look at your vocal cords.

Possibility.....: Typically, a bacterial bronchitis, treated with antibiotics, resolves within about 7-10 days. Since your cough is lasting longer than that, you may have bronchospasm that can occur following a bout of acute bronchitis. The treatment usually consists of a bronchodilator inhaler and perhaps a steroid inhaler. See your doctor again for diagnosis and treatment.

See below: Erythromycin is the main stay of pertussis treatment.  Azithromycin is an alternative.  The earlier treatment is started the more effective it will be.  Supportive care especially for infants is of paramount importance.  Other adjunctive treatment with corticosteroids, salbutamol, pertussis specific igg and antihistamines have been used  but no significant benefit was found with any of them.

Seasonal flu...: you most likely have a seasonal flu caused by a virus. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses. Get plenty of rest, keep fluid intake up, NSAID's for fever/aches.

Upper respiratory: Many of our colds are viral infections and antibiotics will not help at all.  Rest, ibuprofen, decongestants and plenty of fluid help most, along with time.  If yo truly have a bacterial infection, the penicillin class or cephalosporin class are first line treatments, followed by macrolides like clarithromycin and azithromycin.
