how long can or should you take belsomra for insomnia?

4 weeks: Belsomra is one of the newest medications for insomnia so I have little experience with it. It works in a novel way by blocking orexin, a hormone the brain produces to keep us alert and activated. It is currently approved for four weeks. It's advantage is that there's no dependency likely . The long term risk may be depression.

hello! i tried belsomra 20 mg. i could not sleep even with two tablets. why didn't belsomra help? diagnosis: chronic insomnia with anxiety disorder. i am taking escitalopram in the morning 10 mg. should i try rozerem before bedtime?

All are different: Everyone is a little different in what helps them.  Staying on a regular sleep schedule with a wind down routine can be quite helpful, and necessary for some people I suggest trying 4-500mg magnesium glucoonate citrate or threonate-are most absorbable, often melatonin can help if mg not enough or effective

how long does it take for doxepin to work? i tried doxepin for a week for insomnia 3mg (staying asleep). it didnt work so i discontinued it. should i have tried to use it for longer? how long would it take to see medicine like doxepin work?

i've been on 200mg of seroquel (quetiapine) for insomnia for 8 years. i no longer wish to take meds for sleep. what's the safest way to taper off of them entirely?

Insomnia: You say you have been on a significant dose of Seroquel (quetiapine) for 8!years.  You obviously have a physician who s prescribing the medication for you.  It would be in your best interest to consult with that physician and decide between the two of you how and when to taper.

can i take seroquel indefinitely for chronic primary insomnia? 12.5 mg has stopped working after 18 days. should i increase it? ambien (zolpidem) no longer works for me. neither does trazodone.

Chronic Insomnia: I understand your need to have good sleep.
Ambien loses effectiveness after about a month.
Trazadone is not specific medication for insomnia.
Seroquel can have serious side effects. 
Insomnia is a symptom of  stress in your life for which Therapy, Breathing and Music Relaxation, Yoga, Meditation are beneficial.

Information!: Start with good sleep hygiene including a consistent bedtime, avoiding  tv, computers, etc. In bedroom, and a comfortable sleep environment. If those aren't enough, there are a number of prescription meds that can be safe and effective, yet like all meds side effects are possible. Over the counter sleep aids can generally be used short term. Avoid alcohol for sleep it hurts more than helps.

Sleep hygiene & CBT: 1. Keep a regular bedtime & wakening time (to include weekends). Get up the same time each day, regardless of what time you fell asleep. 
2. Make a regular, relaxing bedtime routine. Relaxing rituals prior to bedtime many include a warm bath or shower, aroma therapy, reading, or listening to gentle music. 
3. Sleep in a dark, quiet, cool room on comfortable mattress & pillows.

Acupuncture - never: There really is no good evidence that acupuncture helps insomnia. If you sleep poorly often, and this is a persistent problem, then it is important to find the cause of insomnia and to treat the cause. Treatments can include cognitive-behavioral treatment that help you improve your sleep habits and get away from thoughts and associations that worsen sleep, or different kinds of medicines.

Varies: For someone that is in their 40s, about 72 hours.  This can be 90+ hours in teenagers and less in elderly people.

Yes: Using melatonin on a nightly basis is fine, and probably more effective than taking it only occasionally.  Try practicing good sleep habits as well, and you will be off to dreamland!
