Right away: In most cases of uncomplicated wisdom tooth extraction, return to work is immediate. I went the next day. If there is a lot of pain or developing infection, it may need to be controlled until you can résumé your job function, but that's a rare complication.

Take one day: Depends upon what is your occupation and the amount of pain or discomfort you can tolerate if you don't have complications like bleeding or infection and whether or not you required general anesthesia or only local. You may require to take strong analgesics with drowsiness and  be incapacitated to think clearly. I would at least take one day post op.

Everyone's different: Each wisdom tooth extraction is different and how a patient feels post operatively is different. Many people go back to work the next day, others after a day or two. Don't know how difficult the extractions are... maybe you should ask your oral surgeon for a more precise answer.

Depends: Most surgeons use long acting anesthetics wnen removing wisdom teeth. Novocaine is no longer used in dentistry. Lidocaine is the most often used local anesthetic in restorative dentistry and lasts about 2-3 hours. Bupivicaine and etidocaine can last 5-8 houts if given during wisdom tooth removal.

How do you feel?: Swollen? In Pain? On narcotics? Sutures? What did your surgeon advise you in their post op instructions? No right or wrong answer... use your best judgement.

Not necessarily: Take as directed, they usually kick in in about 30 to 45 minutes, and are not formulated to release all the medication at once. You may put yourself at risk if you do so. Everything cannot be instantaneous.

Firstly : Firstly you must go and have a dentist look at the problem.  You are not going to be able to correct it yourself.  There are a number of possible causes for the discomfort you feel.  It does sound as though the filling might have been subjected to pressure during the removal of the wisdom tooth, or simply the back of the filled tooth.  It is also possible that the back of the last molar is now exposed as the gum recedes,  this can make it more sensitive to temperature change.  That wisdom tooth may have been in the bite again the opposing tooth,  and now in its absence, greater pressure in being imposed upon the filled tooth.  This too might make the tooth tender.

my gums (left side) at the very back of my mouth hurt. (bhind last molar)  wisdom teeth pulled years ago. what else may be causing this irritation?

Maybe gingivitis: The gums behind the last molars can get inflamed, called gingivitis. That area is harder to keep clean with brushing and flossing, so gingivitis happens more often. A dental cleaning can help. Meanwhile, brushing vigorously to clean out that area, and then being very gentle with that area for a week, may let it heal up. If discomfort remains, a dentist can check if it is something bad like cancer.
