had a root canal today for an abscess. doc will only finish the treatment once it is completely drained and swellings gone. how long will that take?

Depends: Depends on how bad the abscess was and whether you respond well to drainage and antibiotics.  Ask the endodontist that question. Could be several weeks.

i am a 20/f. went to the dentist & had a root canal. i also had a abscess  was put on purmycin & adco-metrondaz. they made me  nauseous. today was the last day of the medications and i didn't take it as i havea fever of 38.3. is it the medication?

Fever: Antibiotics are supposed to prevent fevers, not cause them. If, however, you are having an allergic reaction to the medication it can cause a fever. But so can viral diseases (common cold, Flu, Covid-19, etc.) that are not treatable with antibiotics that are designed to treat bacterial infections. Call your General Physician and report your symptoms.

i hv a hard abscess in molar gum.. dentist make a opening in tooth before root canal 5 days ago, nw swelling remain half.. how much time takes to go??

A few days: Once the abscess is drained, most symptoms go away quickly, within a few days. If the abscess is still in the gums, your dentist may suggest that you rinse with warm salt water a few times a day or you may need antibiotics to help fighting infection. Regardless, the abscess will not be cured unless the cause is completely eliminated.

Seek a second opinio: There are always alternatives to most medical problems. I would suggest that you see another good dentist recommended by one of your friends and only if two of them agree that you need removal of your tooth, would i go along with them. Even then you can always seek an alternative treatment and try saving your tooth.

Abcess: The lesion should resolve once the treatment is completed.  It takes anywhere from 3-6 months for the bone to heal in.  Sometimes, if the infection has been present long enough to create scar tissue, a second procedure may be necessary.

Endo retreatment: Whenever a n old root canal is retreated, it is normal for the tooth to be more sensitive than before. The removal of the root canal filling is more laborious that taking out the pulp tissues. It is always possible to take the files outside of the root into the surrounding bone and cause some post op pain. Continue the medication as prescribed and check back with the dentist if symptoms worsen.

can an abscess continue even after a root canal treatment?

Yes and No: If the root canal was successful the abscess should heal by its own accord as the cause of the infection has been eradicated&this can take up to a year for complete healing of the apical area. If it persist then the tooth may be fractured. If this is the case it may have been fractured before the rct. See your dentist/see a specialist for a second opinion.

is it okay to undergo a root canal treatment even if i have an abscess?

Risk vs benefit: You have to weigh the risk complications of immediate treatment vs the risk of waiting on antibiotics to attack the infection.  Sometimes it's best to at least open the tooth and medicate it, then wait for the abcess to "settle down" before completing the root canal.
