Root Canal: Root canals done by endodontist have about a 95 percent success rate. Occationally a tooth can become reinfected and need re -treatment

Yes : A tooth with a root canal can still abscess for several reasons. Root canals are not 100% successful although there is a high success rate. In addition there may be other factors contributing to the infection such as a possible fracture. If the infection continues it should be reevaluated so that a decision can be made to either retreat it conventionally, do an apicoectomy or extract the tooth.

Possible: Sometime the infection can be very serious and the root canal treatment is not enough. If this occur another procedure called incision and drainage may be required to control the infection. Sometimes the tooth may need to be removed. However, your dentist will manage you appropriately.
