i get heartburn everyday and also during the time i am eating - more so then after. six months ago i have had endoscopy and diagnosed with mild esophagitis and gerd. heart problems were ruled out. should i get back on protonix?

Esophagitis : The best person to ask this would be the doctor who did the upper endoscopy. It seems that Protonix could be helpful. It should be taken 30 minutes before breakfast, but I defer to that doctor. Don't eat at least two hours before laying down to sleep, lose excess weight, stop smoking tobacco and you should sleep with your head angled up by raising the head legs of the bed or using a foam wedge.

what is happening in the body that causes chest tightness with gerd? ive already had tests to rule out heart problems such as an echo. but have an endoscopy scheduled to see any esophagus issues. just wondering why chest tightness happens. age 18?

: The esophagus gets irritated with GERD. It is located in the chest and causes chest tightness, burning, or pain. The treatment for chest pain with a negative cardiac stress test can be treating GERD.

i notice chest pain only when i bend over to pick up something up off the floor. no chest pain any other time.  but when i bend over it takes my breath away.  i take omeprazole for gerd.  no history of heart problems and no other signs symptoms of heart p

Chest : Chest pain is a symptom that causes great concern for patients, and rightfully so.  Chest pain may be a symptom of a life-threatening condition such as a heart attack.  Chest pain can also be caused by other problems such as muscle pain or heartburn.

Chest pain from angina (heart pain) is often described by patients as pressure, squeezing, or tightness in the chest.  It can radiate to the neck, arms, or back.  It can be associated with other symptoms such as nausea, sweating, palpitations, shortness of breath,  weakness, or fainting.  Angina can be brought on by exercise, and sometimes relieved with resting.  Risk factors for angina include patients with high blood pressure, smoking, a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, or diabetes.   However, some people also describe their angina as feeling like indigestion or heart burn.

Classic heartburn can be associated with an acid taste in the mouth, or with regurgitation of acid-tasting fluid into the mouth (reflux), especially if bending over or lying down.  Certain foods can contribute to indigestion (chocolate, fatty or fried foods, or coffee for example).

Both angina and heartburn cause pain in the middle of the chest.  It is important that if you have chest pain and don't know the cause that you contact a physician for consultation.  If your symptoms feel like classic heartburn, you can try an antacid, but if you have more concerning symptoms of feeling lightheaded, sweating, nausea, palpitations, or fainting, or if your symptoms are severe or last greater than 20 minutes, you should be evaluated immediately by a physician.  If you are concerned you are having angina, you should also take a 325 mg Aspirin (if you have not been told not to use Aspirin by your doctor), as this can improve outcome in patients with heart problems.  Any new or persistent chest pain patient should be evaluated by a doctor.

i feel like i get heartburn feeling at least twice a day. what do you think it is? could it be heart problems. also i feel muscle ache right across from shoulder on chest?

: You need to have this evaluated to be certain it is not your heart. If it is from gastroesophageal reflux, this can and should be treated. So, see a doctor to rule out a cardiac source-if it is cardiac, a cardiologist is needed. If not, see a GI doctor. Good luck to you!

i have severe heartburn that keeps getting worse. leads to chest pains and difficulty swallowing and breathing. feels like my airway is constricted. family history of heart problems. could it be related?

Doctor can evaluate: Chest tightness and shortness of breath can be due to minor problems or to very serious ones. An emergency room doctor can check to see what might be going on. Sometimes, tests and chest x-rays will be done. Possible causes include acid reflux, esophageal spasm, heart inflammation or attack, partial pneumothorax (collapsed lung), etc... One should not assume acid reflux is always the cause.

what would cause severe burning in my throat? i  know it is not heartburn. it happens when i'm up moving around or walking.  i do have heart problems.

Any time someone...: ...says a symptom of any kind is severe, it's time to see a doctor.  I don't know what heart problems you have, but angina (heart pain from a blocked artery in the heart) can be felt in the neck, shoulder, arm or hand. if a person, without past heart problems, has mild chest pain gone after two gulps of liquid maalox, how sure can one be that it's just heartburn?

Heartburn: The relief by the maalox suggests that it is acid related. If you are anxious relative to your heart, see your doctor a stress test could reassure your mind if necessary.

my bf has swelling in both feet/ankles with bruising (no sprains/injuries), chest pain, severe heartburn, & upper left-quadrant pain. heart problems?

Possibly: While those symptoms can be heart-related, other organ systems maybe the source of all those findings. Also, there maybe a combination of organs that may lead to those symptoms and findings. Leg swelling can be from kidney disorder or varicose veins. Chest pain can be gastrointestinal, pulmonary, chest wall, etc. A physician visit will be helpful.

Doctor can evaluate: A person with chest pain symptoms usually has to go to her doctor (or even to the emergency room) to be checked right away for a heart problems, UNLESS there is another convincing reason for chest pain (decided upon by talking with one's doctor). That means not waiting at home to see if it turns into a more serious condition. As the saying goes, "better safe than sorry".
