On your back: You will usually sleep on your back since being on your side will cause more stress on the collar bones.  Get in the most comfortable position you can and that is about as good as it gets until a certain level of healing ocurrs.  Discuss with your pcp or orthopedist.  Don't be a "pain in the neck!"  ha!

Collar bone: Try sleeping on the side opposite the break. You can also try taking some pain medication before you go to bed.  Sometimes it helps to sleep in a reclining chair.

Yep, I bet it does: Most heal without surgery without resulting in significant residual pain and/or dysfunction. If the doctor is concerned that it won't heal without surgery or that it would heal and result in pain and/or dysfunction, the doctor will discuss surgery. Clavicle fractures: Are most often treated with figure of 8 splint, which places the two ends in apposition in satisfactory alignment.  In rare cases, surgical intervention becomes necessary for anatomic reasons.  Consult an orthopedic surgeon.  But it will take up to 8-12  weeks for recovery.

Clavicle: A broken collar bone and fracture are really the same.  You can have a seperation of the clavicle from the sternum.  That is different.  As always ask your doctor to explain what they found on x-ray to you.  Ask them to explain when family are present to help remind you later.  Be well.  Always wear a seat belt.

i'm prescribed to take 1-2, 5mg percocets every 4-6 hours for a broken collar bone. when i take them, i start to feel hot. is this normal?

Pain Meds: Narcotic pain medications, like Percocet, have lots of side-effects. Most common are drowsiness, nausea, constipation, and restlessness. Feeling "hot" may be from the medication or from the inflammatory reaction your body takes to heal the clavicle fracture. Regardless, pain from clavicle fractures tends to ease rapidly. Recommend using the Percocet for only a few days, then just plain tylenol (acetaminophen).

Splint: A simple splint is all that is usually needed. It is called a figure of eight. It is a wrap that gpoes in front of each shoulder and crosses in the back and distracts the shoulders and the broken ends of the collar bone also.
